Sam,
I want to echo Pippa - great demonstration of how to use a lathe. The hands must be steady. Outstanding detail, love the motion in the shavings. I see some sharpening artifacts around the tool rest, but that's my only nit. Great shot, it brings back some memories for me.

Lovely study of hands practising wood-craft on lathe. Love the motion of the lathe and the flying wood shavings. Very nice composition, detail and tones.

Sam,
I remember a similar shot you posted earlier in your Byte career. That was in B & W. I loved it, but I gotta say this is outstanding. You have really captured the art of turning wood. the chips flying off the blade and the motion of the turning wood is tops. But the part I like best is the detail you have on the back of the thumb. the creases, hair and chips are terrific. Wonderful lighting and composition.

Thanks Rick, Rick, and Pippa. I love these lathes, they are so photogenic!
Steve, it does look a little oversharpened now that I look close. I can't understand it, as I sharpened very little. Perhaps a case of the screen being more sensitive than the print? Either way, it is duly noted. Thanks for the critique!
Thanks Fred, the chips were really flying, even 1/500 sec shutter couldn't freeze them!
Kevin, I'm glad that you remember! (But it was color (- . It was my first POTW here at Byte, and one I'm very proud of. I shot this with my 105 macro, which is a great lens for other shots as well. You just can't beat fixed focal lenses for sharpness! Thanks for the comment.

Sam,
Expertly composed image with great dynamic and superb clarity. I love the details in his hand and the flying chips. I also think your dof works beautifully to focus attention in exactly the correct place. Very well made image.

Super shot again, Sam! I like the skin texture details on the hand, and the great motion effect on the chips. I think if you crop out the top little bit more, the composition would be even super! Great one!
