More Digital Rebel questions...
Does this camera have a bulb setting and can you trigger the camera with a remote? I'm still trying to decide if I should buy this camera...my focus would be on night/lowlight photo as well as action shots. Thanks!

Thanks again Lamont...
Seems like you have all the answers to my questions! Thanks again.
This question is for the professional photographers....what can be the expected salary range for photographers? For example someone who works for a newspaper or someone working for a magazine, etc. I'm thinking about pursuing photography professionally (although I am a beginner) and was just curious. Thanks

$$$$$
I dont know about newspapers or magazines????? But I have done 2 weddings and some other pictures. Both weddings I got $300.00 for each on and printed out 20 pictures for each one and some other things! Senior gave me $200.00 and I did some family pics too. That is where I will be going and I will also try to get into a Gallery too! I just went Pro last year it was scary at first but I just went to work taking lots and lots of pictures. It all worked out just fine. I have not put a package together of pricing as I need to do that here soon. I have 2 more weddings to do in May of this year too. Still just charging $300.00 for each one. I really think I could be getting more.
Do you have any friends or co-workers that want you to take there pitures? And want to pay you for it? Even if it's a small job take them on! Even if you charge them lets say $10.00 a sheet to print out something for them. That will be a start for you.
Here is something you might like to read about Weddings:

Good luck to you....................Lamont :> )

The famous, "How much will I make question". I understand where you are coming from, I often thought that as well when try to deside on which way to go.
Over all there are alot of photographers that call themselves PRO (I am not one of them). So what is a PRO and what do you need to do to be PRO. Well i usually look at it this way. If a photographer is makeing 50% or more of his income off of takeing photos then they can wear the name PRO, but other than that its usually what I call a active hobby.
As for a newspaper photographer it all depends. I mean if you talking small town then you have to be a do it all. So you will probably be writing, editing, printing, and PHOTOGRAPHING. I often helped out a local news paper for fun in my home town (while I was in school) but those guys worked hard and money was not the best. I mean it was liveable but 15-20k and a lot of those guys had college degrees...
Now that I have moved I have I have seen a major differance in newspapers. The bigger citys have assigned photographers, but for the most part there writing there own storys and such as well. Pay is better about twices as much as the home town guys, but getting in is not easy. More or less the best way to get your feet wet is tell the local guys what your doing and donate some of your time. If your work is good enough, they will find a small part for you in the business.
Stock photography is where I have a little more knowledge than anything since its more of what I messed around with. The biggest key here is you need a agent or atleast a photographers business you can work under. And getting a agent is not easy, so I opted for option #2.
Prices are going to range greatly, but if your talking the cover of say a high production wildlife mag. then your looking at close to a $1000. A 1/4 page print usually gets $200 and will vary greatly. The key here is how many magazines they produce. I mean if there doing mass production then the price of the pic will go up...
It all depends on what your doing. Another method is weddings and senoir stuff. Thats not my cup of tea, so I have no idea. But usually a Senoir Class photographer does fairly well in a few hours. But you will have to be flexable...
maybe contact some of your local news papers and see if you can help out. that will allow you to talk to them personally and become friends. After all you may find you dont like it as much as you thought you did.

Lamont...
that article really opened my eyes....hmmmm. I'm not sure if I really agree with the orthodontist bit though. I am managing a dental office right now and am still waiting for any interviews to come my way so I know the tough road it takes get through dental school. Even tougher is to get into any specialty programs as you have to be at the top of your class and still make time for other dental related activities. So I think they do deserve what they make.
I guess I can't stump you but I'm going to try later on.
Ok, since you are a pro.....should I buy the digital rebel now? I am pretty much a beginner although I am learning a lot right now reading and studying pictures on this site. I don't have a lot of money and this purchase along with accessories will do some damage to my bank account. However, I would like to develop my skill and have seriously considered the amount of time I will need to develop my skills...I just want something that I can grow with.
Well thanks for helping this newbie out.
Will

Hi ya Will,
It sounds like you are one busy man! And if you do get the D Rebel you will have some reading to do. As you would any camera! Out doors this can be a "point and shoot camera" but indoors it's going to be a little bit more work. One of the biggest things with any camera is you will need lots of time to play around with it , learning all about it. The great thing about digital is you know pretty much right away how your picture will look. and no film! The D Rebel is a very good camera lots of good things on it, as well a camera that you can grow into and get more goodys for it later. Kinda like upgreading it! Now about learning how to use a camera that has too many things to learn..............look at it this way if you get a camera that is not as nice as the D Rebel and you learn on the smaller or cheaper camera you will wish you went with a better camera. Just think about things you have now. Maybe a car or a computer or some kind of tool and you have said to yourself I wish I would have went to the next brand or the next leavel up. And yes I understand about spending too much money. If you have that money set aside for a camera try to wait just a little bit longer save some more and get what you realy want!
As for going Pro......... I thinks it's like a lot of other things in life. To me being a Pro is someone now taking money for something they like to do. People are now looking to you to do there work what ever that work might be from taking pictures to working on some ones house. As word gets around you will find yourself getting more and more work to do for yes money! Now dont get me wrong a Pro does not know everything about his or her Profession to me it means its going from just a hobby to being responsible for something. In taking pictures at a wedding you are now responsible for part of two peoples life's well a small window into there life and that is a lot of pressure. There will be many ways to look at that this is just the way I myself look at it. I also I think am a Pro at what I do at work and people around me think so too as I have been making eye glasses for 32 years now! And been shooting pictures for longer then that! But you know what......... I dont know it all and I will learn something new ever day about each job! I just hope I can pass on a small amount to someone else.
I know I went on and on here sorry! Take care and have fun...................Lamont :> )

Thanks again...
Thanks again Lamont...I've basically decided to buy the digital rebel but now am looking at what accessories to buy. Being a newbie I want to go with Canon's EF lenses just to be sure I am getting quality equipment. I want the EF-S lens included in the kit and was thinking of the Canon EF 75-300mm/ 4-5.6 lens...I think that's another $200? What's the difference between USM and DM (I think that's it)? I'm also going to buy some IBM microdrive CF cards from a friend who works at IBM.
Also does anyone know of any reputable dealers online that I may call to buy a package from them? Seems like some dealers even ones with high volume still get reviews saying there was bait and switch or items were even missing. I'm also looking for free shipping and no sales tax. That's asking for a lot but who knows...back to Ebay to keep looking. Thanks again!
Will

Hi Will
Will
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...7501&is=REG
This is B&H Photo I have read lots of good things about them. Yes you could find some bad stuff too. But then again you can find any thing bad about anyone! I did buy a few things from them and they have always been good. The going price all over for the D Rebel with the kit lens is $999.00. I think you said your looking at the 75-300 f/4-5.6 III usm lens? If so it's a very good lens I have that one and like it a lot. Hey? Where do you live? I am in Ohio. Also I have looked at differant prices like on the 550EX speedlight and on B&H there are cheaper then the stores around me. The same goes for lenes as well B&H is sometime way cheaper! Good luck and let me know when you get your new camera and what you get with it? And let me know where in the world you live. Have fun.................Lamont

California is where I live...
in a city 45 minutes from San Francisco. The city is Pleasanton but I have not really found it too pleasant. However, I do live with good friends that are owners of the house so the rent is really cheap. Trying to keep myself busy as I am trying to get into a dental school while I am working in a dental office in the bay area.
How's the weather in Ohio? Any massive snow storms yet?
Thanks for the info again Lamont. People on this site seem a lot less elitist towards newbies....I will keep searching for the digital rebel to begin my photography career.

Also http://www.adorama.com is a good reasonable priced place to shop...
As for the Sigma lenses.. they are as good as the Canon glass IMHO (when talkign the entry level stuff).. The lower the F# the better the pics will be.. I have the Sigma 70-300mm zoom and the 28-80mm and both lenses are decent.. Now remember to convert to digital the mm will be x 1.6 ;) http://ocsurfer.deviantart.com to check out some of my other shots as well as my gallery here has some with the 300D and the Sigma lenses.. The 70-300mm could be sharper at the lower f# but shooting at f8-f11 on a tripod at full zoom works out nicely ;) A great middle priced starter lens would be the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 ($500-$600)http://www.usa.canon.com/html/eflen...f_70-200_4.html
http://www.usa.canon.com/html/eflen...8/ef_50_18.html This is also a great lens that can be had for <$90 not much for tele or anything but a great all around lens.
The fixxed aperature lenses tend to be much better IMHO... Remember you can also get a tlel converter 1.4x-2x if need more zoom.
