Digital wallets ???
Does anyone have any experience with these ? I thought I was all set. I have my digital Rebel and my Dell laptop. I figured I could go just about anywhere with unlimited picture taking. Now I find out that with something like this I wouldn't have to take the laptop along after all.
If anyone is using them let me know how you like it. As well as the manufacture, model and price.
Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim. I have the Archos Multimedia 20 with the compact flash/secure digital adapter. Basically I bough it to be able to download my cards when shooting and keep it light.
The pros:
* light and portable. The batery when fully charged will power the devide for 8 hours or so, sith moderate use of the LCD display.
* 20 GB disk, plenty of space. Actually I keep 10 GBwith MP3s and 10GB reserved for pictures. Since I shot 95% JPEG, 10 GB is more than enough. Never have downloaded more than a couple GB on a single trip (weekend)
* Bundled MP3 player is a cool feature... for the way in and out.
* LCD display allow you to show your picts, but it is not good enough for review. Youc an also connect it to a TV and passa quick slideshow for friends and family on the same night.
The Cons:
* Firmware could be better, but it is useable.
* Batery cannot be changed... No use on having a spare. Archos does not sale a spare and they do not recommend changing it. So, if you misuse the LCD and got outr of juice you are doomed (this is provided you do not have electrycity close).
* 20GB may be just enough for pictures if you shoot RAW. Archos does not recommend changing the disk. But If I can get a cheap 40 BG 2.5"disk I will change it myself.
It is not cheap (about $350), but then, 20 1 GB compact flash will cost about $2000.
Hope this helps.

for larger capacities you might look at the X-Drive II
It may be discontinued but a clearance company I have used before is selling the without a disk new for 89.99. It comes with instructions for installing any 2.5" disk you want. It has a seven way card reader installed.
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=VP-2060
they also have 20gm drices for $89 IBM 30gb for 107 and 40 gb toshiba for 137.

I have used this company for other items several times and they are reliable but remember they are a clearance company. These items are listed as new but many other items are refurbished. All items are clearly stated as to condition, and what comes with it or is missing. Read the entire listing, they do not hide anything.

Thanks for the reply guys. It looks like I need to do a little more research and see if maybe I can find a good deal after Christmas.
Something like this would be perfect. It would fit in the camera case with no trouble at all.
Thanks again,
Jim

how much storage X's Drive II VP
I checked the link
http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=VP-2060
but I dont see where it says you can store data off your cards so you can reshoot.
Am I missing something?
X's Drive II VP 2060 6-in-1 USB 2.0 Portable Storage Device
also says 1.6 hour average battery life
The other question I had was.. I have an XD card.. I saw on oplympus page that they sell a card to place your xd so you can use it on any camera that takes CompactFlash type cards. So I wonder if this device will still work for this option.

quote: With support for CompactFlash cards, Smart Media, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Secure Digital, MultiMedia Cards and IBM Microdrive this device will come in handy for transferring data! The built-in LCD provides status indicators for battery life and file transfers.
This is the section that I believe they are talking about transferring the files or images from the Compact flash card to the "X Drive" unit.
I would think that if it is Compact Flash card compatible, it should work. However I'm sure someone else can speak on that matter better then I could.
Thanks,
Jim

Digital wallets ???
Hi,
That is a good deal for storing Pics. The Xd memory cards are a newer version of the Smartmedia cards. You would need an adapter for the Xd card To go into the Smart Media slot in the reader.

I may not have been clear in my answer. The wallet will let you store your images on the hard disk but the hard disk is not included in the $89 price you have to buy one of the hard disks and install it. Then it will do everything you need. This company is very causious in how they word their ads not to promise more than they give. I had to read it three times and I deal with them.
The unit and the 40GB drive is a monster at a relatively low price. I do not believe they were ever sold with that large a disk.
The six way reader is how you load the images into the wallet. Usually when they say 6 way they do not take XD drives which is the newest type. There may be some adapters that accept the XD into another slot, I have read something to that effect, but it is one more item to find that is not included in this offer. Every other type of card fits as sold.
