80-400 lens with D100
This is the first picture with my newly acquired 80-400 f4.5/5.6 VR lens. It was early morning on a cold snowy day. This shot was taken at f5.6 at f400 at 1/4 sec. If it wasn't for the VR, I don't think I would have gotten the picture.

Daylight Picture
I finally had a chance to test the 80-400 VR Nikkor during daylight. Here is a picture of the squirrel feeding. I think that the lens has done a great job. Iw facing into the sun, so this was essentially a backlit picture.

New Lense
Hi Gill,
It is a Nikon 80-400mm f4.5/5.6 VR zoom lense. The VR is Nikon's virbration reduction technology which cancels out a lot of shake, when you han hold the lens to take a picture. Nikon claims that you can hand hold 3 stops lower than if you did not have the technology. It works great on a long zoom like the 400.

Great pics ED, makes me want to get one for my D100 now. What did the lens cost (if you don't mind)?

Hi Colin,
Thanks for your comments. That lens retails for around $1400 US. Nikon has a rebate of $100. I bought is used for about $1000. It really does a good job on the D100. I have tried it with a Kenko 1.4 teleconverter and it works fairly well.

Hi Bud,
That first shot was what you might call a "Hail Mary". It was pretty dark and gray. I took it wide open at f4.5 and 1/4 sec hand held. The VR is what saved it. In addition, I forgot to resharpen, after I downsized. The original is a lot better.

Thanks,
This new lens is great. I just tried adding a Kenko Pro 300 TC 1.4 to the lens, and the results were quite pleasing. It takes a little getting used to but it works.

Adding the Kenko Pro 300 TC 1.4
Here is what I was able to do by adding the Kenko teleconverter to the lens. This is the equivalent of a 840 mm lens. I am pretty impressed.

Either my clocks are wrong, or you are up early. I will try shooting the moon, if the weather lets up. Right no we are in he middle of a heavy rain storm.
