New here! Please could you critique my photos

Hi all!

I've just found this site and have now registered. Would you mind casting a critical eye over my photographs and let me know what you think. I've been an amateur photographer for about 2 years and the photos were taken on either a Minolta Dimage 5 or Minolta Dimage 7Hi.

Here's the link: http://www.pbase.com/britishbeef

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Geoff.

British-

Checked out your gallery, very nice. Really liked the Night driving one...shows wonderful motion, really liked that on. Also your flower pictures were very inviting. For me when I look at macro flowers I really want to see detail, and yours were detailed but perhaps more detail could come out? Unless you were going for the softer look...? I liked the colors, and the compositions. The one lone pedistal I really liked. The other picture I liked was the B&W boat in the mud? That was a good one. I really like B&W. I am trying to learn this area because I am so attracted to it. My philosophy about critiquing pictures though is so subjective. People like what they like. Photographers too, they shoot what they find interesting, while others may have totally different interests...and or opinions. Technique/technical however is another story, and I am just a novice when it comes to this area.

Good luck and keep the camera handy...you have an eye for interesting shots.

Geoff,
I like your stuff. You have some neat photos there. The only suggestion I could make is that I noticed almost all your subjects are in the center of your photographs. Try moving them about a third of the way in from the edge (right-left, top bottom edges). I know with sports this may not be pratical.
Have fun,
Colin

Thanks for the comments.

me_wrestler - Yes you are right! I guess I should now start to experiment with the 'rule of thirds'. In fact, since I shot those photographs, I have started to put the rule into practice. I'll post some examples soon.

Geoff.

devilwoman - Thanks for your comments. I do like the soft look with the flowers. However, with my fixed lens on my Minolta Dimage 5 / 7Hi it's hard to get any depth of field when it's set to Macro, added to that for some of the shots I had a +4 close up filter attached. I love macro work and it always suprises me how beautiful things look close up. It's so easy to miss the natural beauty of things.

Geoff.
