When do you rate pics
In addition of the thread "How do you rate pics" this thread deals with the question when (and why) do you rate pics.
When do I rate pics: when I like (or very much dislike) a certain picture. I don't rate ordinairy pictures (actually I should rate them as well).
Why do I rate pictures: actually, I don't know. I just want to give an opinion I guess.
Any comments ?

I never rate photos unless the photographer asks for an opinion.
I believe anyone who puts time and effort into making a photo important enough to them to post for other to see has made a good photo. If they want advice on how to see the image in another way or how to technically improve what they shot, I will give technical advice, but photography is subjective.
My favorite photos will probably not mean as much to someone else as to me. Why I consider them exceptional is a very onesided opinion, I would not put that standard on someone else.
Pictures I took that were easy are sometimes loved while a photo I had to slave to get is just passed over.
My standard for judging someone elses photographs is very simple. If it brought a smile to the face of the photographer it was good and worth shooting and if it brought a smile to someone else it is very good.
What makes a "great photo" well that is an entirely different thread.

I've only been here a week, but I guess for the most part I rated pictures that I had a strong feeling about. Anything that didn't really stand out to me I passed on.
Being new to photography I find it most useful to read comments, but fun to see numbers, too.
I decided to post several of my pictures because I wanted objective eyes to look at it and see how I could improve. I have a thick skin so don't be afraid to let loose!

The constructive critique of a photo is far more valuable than any number. For this reason I only rate the photos in the POTW. Otherwise, I try to give some sort of feedback (most of the time it's just how much I like the pic).

Actually our critisism of obvious flaws in
the pic can be of great help to the photographer, although to go any deeper
is a difficult move 'cause we don't know
in what context they are intended [ i.e. testing, personal pleasure, serious...] That is to say if it were me, they are intended for my everexpanding skill, than I would welcome as much feedback as possible. But, you know that one would seem to invite critism by the act of posting. It is comfortable, knowing that we are all not so critical so as to do harm. I guess one cannot be ignorant that we all just want to help each other.

Well... I agree with me-wrestler. If I look a picture I like, or evoque strong emorions, I try always to leave a comment on what I like, what emotions it transmit to me and if I see any improvement opportunity I share that too. The number is meaningless IMHO.
I do this, because it is what I like to receive ... I enjoy reading comments on my photos: either good ones about what other people like and also constructive critiques. This is a public site, and I think most of us post pictures to be seen and to expose them (and ourselves) to the comments from other photographers.

Due to me being a relative newbie, I sometimes find it difficult to judge a photograph. I will tend to single out certain points of a shot that I particularly find eye-catching or interesting and try to give my limited opinion on it. I agree with the fact that most of the time a photograph that has been posted has personal worth to the poster, I think that this has to be taken into consideration.

I'm also a newbie. I think it's great when people take the time to post opinions about my pics. Of course we all like nice comments, but I value the comments that tell me how I could have improved the shot just as much.
