disable automatic "medium quality" image generation after upload?
If my pics are good, that means they have a lot of little details (not because I have a talent , they are not bigger cause I don't know how to use jpeg compression.
By clicking on thumbnails in gallery preview page, visitors are coming directly into automatically reencoded medium quality pics which are usually with much less detail than the minimum I'd like to show.
Can I choose to disable that imho annoying feature when I'm uploading a pic?
I noticed that once, that medium pic simply wasn't generated (http://www.bytephoto.com/photopost/...=500&page=1). Very interesting.

Hi Joe,
The reason a medium size photo was not generated in this case is because the original size uploaded was below the threshold at which the system determines that a medium size is needed ….
The medium size photo is needed because most people in the world are still on dialup connections and it would be burdensome and unrealistic for them to view full size images of each photo … most viewers know that they can opt to see the larger photo and it’s also marked ‘Click on image to view larger image’ on the medium size as for the for individual galleries to exclude med size photos that’s not available as it’s a ‘global variable’ that effects the whole gallery

Hi Paul,
Did I say that medium size is not needed?
I was talking about optional feature to disable medium reencoding.
I tested how your threshold works and found that it looks only at image size, I guess because you wanted to keep at least medium size pic into site's template, not because of slow dial-up links constraints, like you said?
It didn't reencode my 100% quality 300KB heavy but only 600 wide picture, and ruined only 60KB light but 640 wide. Look at my gallery.
To sum it all up, here is my suggestion.
Enable the option to turn off the medium resizing (with contingent notice that the original size shouldn't be bigger than 640*xxx or even better 800*xxx if you really think it's very important to have the image in desired whole page width).

I agree with Paul.
I think the automatic medium size photo is a good thing. I rather load all photos medium size to make the site run faster. If a photo catch my eye, I will upload the full size. I think it is an important feature that should not be eliminated.
Let the user choose, everytime, if they want to upload a bigger size photo, as it is right now.

Yes but what about the other members who do not know how to resize correctly, or do not wish to. This medium size feature is mainly for those reasons, allowing an easy, not too complicated upload for beginners...

As I said, the feature should be OPTIONAL and enabled by default so other users wouldn't be affected.

As I said, I wouldn't disable anything. I would ADD a feature to OPTIONALLY disable a medium resizing.
