Contest Results
Here we are again, the second time this month we find ourselves on Wednesday (Thursday in Scotland and France) with last week's images still up and still posters moving their images to the front page as they feel like it even with no new comments. Yet no word from Admin. about it any of it.
What's going on Stephen & Paul? If you have problems let us in on them, we will be supportive I feel sure.
Sheila.

Sheila-
My gut feeling is that the admins are not photographers and are in it for whatever revenue they can extract. Therefore, you cannot expect them to feel the same enthusiasm as we. It is a shame.

I don't think that's so, I believe at least Stephen is a photographer.
If they're just in it for the money then I think they'd manage the site better. I suspect their lives are overwhelmed in some way and they simply can't find the time to give to byte. They neglect the contest, their monthly challenge section lies dormant.
Either way, as you say, it's a shame. I've withdrawn both of my entries this week. I not entering anymore to be thrown in with a sea of old entries.

Maybe the details of running a website like this can be overwhelming at times. When there are only two moderators, that's not much backup.
I hate to see a good site like this begin to collapse as members get discouraged. Hey mods, would you consider some volunteer help with some aspects of it, especially the weekly contest which seems to be by far the most active area. I know some of the larger sites (admittedly the non-profit ones are the best examples) have non-paid members helping out. Anyone out there with some extra time??

Although the contest is secondary to why I post here, it is frustrating to not have the fresh gallery of shots each week. Unfortunately, this week has started off the same as last week, and I fear that another week of the same may be hazardous to the health of the site.
Perhaps Stefan's emu got loose in the control room.
I think most of us appreciate the nature of this site, and that it is free, run by people with day jobs. I think Jim has a worthy suggestion. How about it, admin? Want to let the inmates run the assylum every now and then, as needed? Perhaps a few of the more talented (read: not me) photogs on the site could pick up a week or two here and there to lighten the load? By having different members judge the occasional different week, no one would be permanently excluded from the contest, and no one would be overwhelmed by time commitments. Same thing could be done for the monthly challenge.
By some stroke of luck, this site has fostered a welcoming and helpful member base. Knowing how that base has helped me, I'd hate to see it fade away.
I've sent some pms requesting admin response; hopefully they'll have a chance to respond.

I belong to another site, a membership fee site, that is run very efficiently. Very organized and professional. It's Digital Image Cafe and worth taking a look at to see how they have it all set up.
They do have their daily contests (in categories) judged by anonymous members. The criteria is that they must have won a certain number of "photo of the day" themselves before they can be considered for judging. The finals (photo of the week, month etc.,) are judged by outside professionals. Scott Kelby does photo of the month I think.
It seems to work well for the most part. Even though a lot of the photography is not my personal cup of tea I have won there, as have Andrew and Joe and also Tony I think.
I think the tough part about the situation now is that there has been no word. And people will drift away and not come back.
I have been here a long time and as much as I threaten to leave in a huff sometimes I am inordinately fond of this place and would hate to see it go.
Sheila.

First let me apologize for the delays in administering the potw contest …
As many of you know Stephen has been taking care of the site … and I and been on a sabbatical of sorts ..
I have not heard from Stephan and sincerely hope that he is ok …
As for the potw / site … I will take over the duties for the time being …
Any info on the status of potw would be great .. It will help me sort it all out

Paul.
I'm not sure of the exact time frame but my guess is that it has been at least several weeks with no POTW. Many of us voluntarily have moved our images at the end of the week and this past week we had a self admininstered POTW judged by Khedquist. Perhaps if you looked at the image dates on the back pages you'll get an idea how long we've been hanging.
So glad to see you here and I also hope that Stephen is ok.
Darren

Stephen was "taking care of the site"? - no one has been taking care of the site, Paul. You will see that the post that begins this thread is dated March 19.
Rather than asking the members to sort this out for you perhaps you could make some kind of professional administrative decision? Put the site back on an even keel. Right now there are old posts and new posts all in together.
It's my opinion the entire site needs new life - including whoever your judging panel is.
I trust your sabbatical was pleasant.
Sheila.

Paul,
Fantastic to hear from you!!! We have two straight weeks of no top 6 and one week that has been voted on but Has not been Posted. I think if we posted the week voted on plus this last weeks winner by Kevin then worked on this week it would bring things back with the least amount of trouble.
Hope to see the board straightened out soon.
Again Good to see you post and here something.
Hope things are well with stephen.

Paul,
Glad to see you stop in. Here's hoping you can get things running smoothly.
As if you haven't had enough thrown at you, I strongly urge you to take a read through this thread as well: http://www.bytephoto.com/forums/t6237.html There are several talented photographers here who would be willing to pitch in during rough periods like the site is having right now.
I hope Stephen is ok also.
steve
