Larger is not always better. I had the Sigma 50-500 and was not totally happy with it. It was heavy and not sharp enough wide open. I now use a Canon 300mm, usually with the Canon 1.4x TC. It has IS which helps a lot.
My suggestion would be to borrow a large lens from a friend to try or rent a few lens for a week or two and try them out befoer sinking thousands of dollars into one which you may not like.
The ideal lens would be 500mm+, light, sharp and cheap. Unfortunately, no such lens exists.
