there's no single 'best' camera to use, it'll be good to be positioned near the action. I'm not sure what type of sports are you referring to and you'll need to plan what type of shots do you have in mind.

Example: For basketball, do you want to see the players sprinting up the court with the ball or are you waiting for some slam dunk action?

Water-skiing: Position near ramps to shoot some in air action or along open water ways for other tricks.

Most of the time you'll need a long lens and again depending on the type of sports, it might not need to be a fast lens.

Outdoor sports in the day will generally be very bright and shooting at f/9 at 1/500 and above is very possible, however, indoor matches like basketball or soccer night matches will require some fast lenses

If you're looking at cameras like DSLR go for one which has a high continuous drive mode like 5fps. SLR-like compact cameras hardly have 5fps and you'll probably need one that has >400mm (35mm equivalent focal length) in consumer terms they'll probably call it 12X zoom.

What sports in particular are you interested in?

Something like motor racing might require a different set of equipment just so you have a greater chance of catching the action.
