The 420Ex is fully compatible with the Dgital Rebel and worthy of it. As a matter of fact I have a 420EX as my primary external flash for my 10D. For my purpose ( I shoot mostly on available light and use the 420EX as fill flash) is more than enough. the 550EX is great, but much more expensive... and bigger too.

IMHO the 300D offers great value for the money. the differences between the 300D and the 10D are minor, and for most people not significant enought to pay extra $500. I got a refusbished 10D, so m y price difference was just $200 and I took the 10D.

Lenses are the biggest investment as someone said. I began with the canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and the canon 50mm f/1.8 USM II. Great lenses. My next two (in order) most likely will be the Sigma 15-30mm and the canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM.

I am just and amateur on a paycheck, so I cannot afford those two lenses now. Perhaps next year ...

snapper....the 420ex works fine with the rebel...only thing is that you would need the 550ex if you wanted to use another flash as a slave..as for being new to all of this I to was in same boat...only started taking pictures in march so this is all new to me...so rebel is super as a point and shoot or a full blown dslr...good luck and hope this helps

Very informative, I feel the need to get my hands on a Rebel asap, but have other financial priorities so I guess I'll have to be patient unitl new year.
