Direct light source is usually when the light is pointed straight at something. e.g. sunlight on the beach, a flashlight pointed at something - whatever is captured in it's beam is directly lit.
Indirect light comes from the side or the back or bounced off a wall, ceiling, reflector etc. It is not the source of the light. e.g. think of a pool table. You can pot the ball in the pocket with a direct shot. Or you can bank it off the side using angles (indirectly).
Hope that helps. Gotta agree with Sheila though - if this is for a class, the instructor should definitely be providing the concepts before the assignment.
