hello jgc888
sorry i'm still none the wiser - the book downloaded ok but when i tried to open it a windows msg appeared saying it cannot open the file because it does not know what program created it. There does not seem an obvious way to download gimp ie: the usual download button - can you paste a weblink for me please and i'll have another go.
thanks
pippa

Pipafox,
sorry, I've been away, actually stil am but now have web access
PSP XI does have a trial version.
I had downloaded it to test it out first before I made the decision to purchase it.
I havent used ACDSee too much for editing mostly for organization.
I have used PS7, MS Digital Image Suite for editing and also Nikon Capture NX for RAW conversions. I love NX. but it doesnt do cloning for those annoying dust spots should they appear.
So thats when I use PSP XI
It has an amazing auto photo fix and another option called clarify that also works quite well with most pictures.
go here then click on TRY for the trial version

thank you helpful person - it looks great and i think i am going to get on very well with this program - exciting!
after the dowload when i opened it there appreared a "learning centre" strip down the left side of the software which explains what each tool is used for - in clear uncomplicated language.
previously when i visited the site (not your link) it did offer a trial version but i still had to enter purchasing info/card details
and then it would be up to me to cancel at the end of the trial - did not like that idea as am forgetful and undoubtedly would have neglected to cancel the payment option if i did not like the program.
anyhow, thank you again and enjoy your stay away.

GIMP
You can download GIMP and the GTK +2 runtime environment automatically at
gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
You don't have to download the book. It is all online below the download button at gimp-savvy.com after clicking on "Book".

got gimp - was just a matter of finding the right site/sight to download it -thanks a lot jgc888. i'm glad you recommended it and it will be a while before i get to grips with it as it does look a bit complicated - all in good time hey?
the book comes in 5 parts and i have downloaded the first two then my computer had a funny turn and rejected the third part halfway through downloading - will try again soon.
i took some pics in raw format today and could not view them in gimp-
also really enjoying my trial version of corel paintshop pro photo xi
thankyou

I currently use Lightroom and CS2; however, until recently I used Elements 2 and later Elements 4. When I started, I didn't even have a clue on how to capture or what a layer even was.
I bought a "how to" book that included a series of drills and a DVD with the drill materials for about 25. Best investment I have made in photography. For each step they taught, I was able to do the technique with the same image. Then I tried on my work. I think this is a good way to get into photo software if you do not have someone around to help you.

Pippa, I can give you some practical instruction on using the GIMP, if you'd like. We could do it by email. PM me if you're interested.

cheers buddy - checked your softwares out and unfortunately are a bit out of my price range - shame because if the quality of your pics owe any thanks to do with the software you use - then doors are closed to me.
thanks again

Have you ever tried Faststone Image Viewer? It has a lot of editing features and is FREE; however I don't believe it can Burn a DVD.

thank you Smo for mentioning FREE software - others will find that useful.
in i end i got an amazing deal of the internet, cs2 for £30 (true); that site has now disappeared. fullsoft (just in case they ever appear again). i took a risk and thankfully the hard copy they sent me was sound - i registeredit and received an update
takes a long time to get to grips with and i still haven't mastered it but its extremely versatile. i sometimes buy photo mags with a dvd tutorial and they have helped enormously.
