You could fib and say it 'suddenly stopped working'. ;) My 18-55 died last summer and even though it was under warranty, it took 6 weeks to return it to me. I was lost without it. However, if you need one urgently, there are quite a few camera stores that will rent though. I got a couple of pro-quality lenses for a couple of weekends for a very reasonable price.
So I'm raising a glass of wine to your bottle because I know exactly where you're coming from.

It may not be as bad as you think.
My Sigma 28-300 just stopped zooming. The zoom ring turned but nothing happened. I could zoom by manually sliding the lens barrel.
Mine was also out of warranty.
Fortunately, I live 5 miles from Sigma USA. I brought it in and they repaired it in 5 hours (hooray for them) and charged $50.
