Calibrating the monitor

Apologies if this has been asked before. Recently got back from South America and am now facing the rather tedious task of editing and culling the photos. However, as I will not be 'officially' home for a few days, I will be using a friends monitor. I have heard that some monitors have a colour distortion or make the pictures appear brighter/darker... is there some sort of calibration or test that you can perform?

Thanks
Joel

Joel,
To calibrate your monitor you can use both hardware and software.
The software I use is WiziWYG XP. It is free to download.
As for hardware, the best choice is probably a ColorVision Spider.
