Advice, please

I just upgrade from the 6 MP Rebel to the xti.
I am not happy with the picture quality when the camera is set on fully automatic, they seem to be quite dark.
I wanted to post a few examples, but it seems I have to have 15 posts, and since I mostly lurk here and am not knowledgeable enough to post, I obviously can't get to 15!
Any advice off the cuff?

They don't look too dark to me...not so dark that some processing on Photoshop or some other editor couldn't fix. There is detail in the shadows and good color representation.

There may be some adjustment on the camera to compensate and get the results you want.
