Problem with larger photos...

Another newbie trying to learn the ropes here...

I have been busy learning the ropes with my new Canon S3 IS and I have a number of shots I took with my older Olympus (just before it malfunctioned). Many of the images are quite large, some close to 3MB, and I am working on saving them as smaller images.

I have some already small enough to upload, however. I uploaded two for the contest this week and they look fine... until you click for the "larger image". The larger image looks like a blotchy mess. I am stumped.

On my computer I view these images in a very large format and they are fine. ONe of them I have made into a large print and it was fine. I thought maybe my Canon was just taking crappy photos but based on my own viewing and the prints that may not be the case.

Even though I am a relative rookie in the world of photography, I'd like to at least have quality photos on here and a SHOT in the contest. The regular photo size does not seem too bad to me, just that larger size that seems screwy.

Any advice is GREATLY appreciated... thank you!

Hi .. and welcome to bytephoto...

I looked at one of your images in the largest view … and it’s 1875x2500 …

Large View
http://www.bytephoto.com/photopost/...47&size=big

the gallery application tries to make your image more user friendly by resizing

Medium View

if you want control over the image it’s recommended that you resize the image 'before' you upload it .. if you set get the maximum dimension to less then 800 in height / width .. the gallery application won’t make the medium size view .. thereby giving you control over your image quality

Thanks...

Thanks... I took some time to practice resizing the images today and I think I got it. I was able to test this out by resizing another image and then uploading it to my gallery. It worked just fine. Thanks again!

I did want to add one thing. Make a duplicate of your original and re-size that. Always keep your original intact - that way if you ever want to make a nice print you have lots of pixels and can up your resolution.

Sheila.
