I'm interested in taking some sports pictures and i was looking into some 70-300 mm lenses. The one i'm looking at is a f4-f5.6. It also says it is a macro lens which is capable of macro photography with a 1:2 maximum magnification at the focal length of 300mm. I'm thinking that for taking faster pictures you'd want a lower f range. Is this right? So would f4-f5.6 be ok for taking sports pictures (basketball, football)? Also what does the phrase about the macro mean? The lens is for a Nikon D50. Thanks for your help!!

You are correct, F2 would be better for sports photography.
What namebrand lens were you looking at?

I have the D70 and probably the same 70-300 lens you might be looking at now. Its ok for zoom shots but not spectacular imo for action shots because of the time it takes to focus and also the Fstop. The Nikon 70-300 that I have doesnt work well for macro shots.
Were you looking at a Sigma by chance?
