First try at night photography. Advise and help welcome
Hi All,
I'm a new member here and somewhat new to digital SLR photography. I have been shooting a Canon AE-1 for several years. I have now just bought a Canon 350D and have a few extra lenses to go with it and am really enjoying the freedom of a digital SLR as I can shoot away without worrying about film.
Well here's some shots I took at night and would like you opinions and advise on them. This is my first try at long exposure shots.
Could someone please help me out with this forum. For some reason I am not allowed to post attachments. Is there given number of post I must make first, or do I need an upgraded membership ?
So for now the photos will be in my gallery, please look there.
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan welcome to BytePhoto …
The hot bed of ‘photo commenting and critiquing’ is in the gallery areas .. with the weekly photo contest being the busiest …
That said if you want display in a forum post … go to your gallery and simply right click on the image to get its properties …
The url will look something like this
http://www.bytephoto.com/photopost/...sunset.jpg?4375
strip off everything after the .jpg in this case ?4375 and then use the IMG tag available in your posting interface
for more info on uploading to your free gallery space here at BytePhoto see this http://www.bytephoto.com/forums/t1638.html

I like the composition with the diagonal sweep of the ship's shape and the vertical posts in front forming a kind of frame.
The following crit is personal and subjective. I would do some lightening of the gangway to further empahsize the diagonal to the ship's head and also the right side of the ship's front to bring out the shape from the dark background.
And a bit of shapening would also delineate the main subject better.
On the whole a pleasing image!

I have the same camera as you're using here. What I would do is set the ISO at 100, Aperture at F22, white balance at Auto or try a shot at different white balance settings to see which you like best. Most important is to use a tripod and use either your camera timer or a remote release for the shutter. The setting I gave will give you a long exposure time. The lights will have a star like appearance. Try this method and see what you think!
