Filters to use?

Here I am asking another question. About 25 years ago I use to use Cokin filters with a Canon A1 & then life continued on...
I've recently gotten back an interest in photography, only now I've got a Canon 30D. I'm wondering about what filters I should go with, Cokin, Tiffen or some other brand name.
Also are there any books on filter use that some one could recommend?

David, I've got Hoya & Tiffen filters that I used to use with my Minolta SLR. They are fully compatible with my Nikon DSLR. I also have a Cokin system for my ND grad filters and must admit that setting them up is a bit of a pain - I like screwing things in and leaving them there - but they do work well to. Sure, you can get super expensive filters that will probably give you a tiny edge on a mid-range one because of the quality of the glass - but it depends what you're using them for and just how precise you want to be. My old Hoya circular polarizer is my most used one and it works fantastically adn was a very reasonable price.
