could two memory cards go bad at once? my camera says cards need to be formated but ,it gets to a point and locks and won't finish formatting

I think the first question is how where they stored prior to this?

It would be highly unlikely for 2 unrelated and undamaged cards to both fail in the same way at the same time. HOWEVER if they were sun, heat, or cold damaged while stored together, they could very well both be bad.
