Photo Quality after retouching

Hi, is there any quality drops on my digital prints after the picture being retouched? Thanks.

Yes, whenever you do any retouching you lose some quality in the picture. Many times it is offset by the improvement you add to correct an original defect. If you work with jpeg, you lose every time you save in the jpeg format, since it is a lossy compression algorithm. You probably want to consider running unsharp mask, after you do any retoouching.

It really depends on what you mean by retouching. If you are cleaning up blemishes and such (and saving in a loss-less format) there should be no loss in quality.

Vuzu as mentioned here already jpg is a lossy compression and therefore some data is lost upon compression ….. I typically shoot in the highest quality setting with my G3 and when I edit it in PS7 I save a copy of the photo in PSD file with the layers intact …. Then depending on my usage I will save a copy with the appropriate settings for that use…… I like to keep the psd file as it allows for easy changes in the event that say I print a copy and find that maybe it needs a little more usm or has a color issue …. This way I’m not trying to work on the jpg that has already been retouched... I’m back to the highest quality of the image that is available to me without have to start over from scratch with the original
