photoshop history question

probably an easy question for most of you, but the answer if there is one would really help me. question: when working on a picture in photoshop and you've completed maybe five steps that show in the history pallette. however, after looking at the end result, let's assume that i want to go back to step three and insert a shadow. Is there a way to do this without erasing the steps that followed step three. if i hit on step three and insert a new step, all steps following that one are then erased and i need to start over again from that point which is time consuming. would appreciate any help on this one. ron.
