Write Errors

I have a Finepix A340 and it came with a 16Mb FujiXD card. Never had any issues with this but i needed to buy a bigger card, so i tried a 1GB XD from Kodak. After 4 shots i get a write error, so i tried an olympus card and i get the same.
My understanding is when i format a card in my camera that it creates the DCIM folder and the 100_FUJI folder. This is not happening when i try to format on these larger cards.

any ideas?
