I dont know what your error is but..
Your camera could be set to save batteries. I have mine set that way as well. It goes into sleep mode after 3 minutes of not using it. Once I start to use it, the system wakes up and is ready for use again
Possibly the blurry could be because of the fstop you are using or maybe you have your settings to focus on the closest subject.
So that means where you point your focus, the subject will be in focus and everything behind it will be blurry so to bring more attention to the subject matter.
Here is an example of a white egret I took along the Delaware River, the low river in the background is a bit blurry but makes the bird stand out better.. The blurring is intentional on my part. I used Aperture F7.1
