D50...few questions
I can't seem to figure out how to change or set the shutter speed to work correctly. Can someone please help me with this?
I am also having a problem with the picutres coming out really dark when the camera is in any mode other than Auto, is this normal or is there a particular setting I should chage?
Thanks in advance

check your exposure compensation button.
sounda like you might have it set to -1 up to -5
Either that or your shutter speed is so fast and you are in a low light situation that you are not getting a lot of light for the shot.

If you are trying to change the shutter speed in M (manual) or S (speed) mode, you need to do a partial click on the shutter just to tell it you are ready for a new photo, then rotate the spinning wheel on the top right side of the back of the camera to set your speed to the desired level.
I think Ruth has nailed your dark photos with the Exposure compensation comment. That same wheel will also adjust the exposure compensation when you are in A (aperture) mode, S (speed) mode, or (I think) P for program mode. Hit the +/- button on the top right near the shutter button, hold it down and use the wheel to change it back to 0.
