So what you need is a camera that has an ISO setting of up to 1600 but produces pictures at that setting without a terrible amount of digital noise. That rules out all point and shoot compacts since their sensors are very small which means noise is bad at high iso settings.
So that brings us to an SLR. And in the high iso/low noise stakes, Canon seem to have the edge over Nikon. So i would get a Canon digital SLR and make sure it's got some sort of image-stabilisation either in the lens or in the body as your indoor shots without flash will mean risk of camera shake at slow speeds unless you use a tripod.
