Do you mind telling in a little bit more detail how you're taking the pictures?
(eg. How far away are the birds? What are the conditions? What problem are you having when taking the bird shots?)
I don't shoot much wildlife, but I always hear people say that patience is the key. A tripod is also a must. The z740's zoom is 10x, and your movements are exaggerated the farther you zoom. If light is adequate, a faster shutter speed will also help you get that crisp shot. If the bird's in motion, you could also try panning (moving the camera with the route of the bird motion).
Hope that helps!
