Unhappy What I see on my monitor is not what I get back from lab

my problem -- some prints I received from my photo processing lab look several shades darker than what I see on my computer. I have a Nikon D70, Dell computer w/19" Ultrasharp Digital flat panel monitor, software is Corel Photo Album/Paintshop Pro Studio which came with the computer.

The lab tells me I need to manually calebrate my computer monitor to match the pictures they sent back.
Dell tells me, I need to use the same software the lab uses to see the same colors etc. Have any of you been there? Done that? this is all new to me, and I am thoroughly confused. thanks!

I dunno really. Maybe the software you use has different color management with the software that they use.

You might need to invest in some monitor calibration software.

Cool Matching

This is a bit late, but hopefully can help.
1) You MUST calibrate your computer - every 2 weeks is recommended. And work in the same light that you calibrate in.
2) Ask your lab if they print using RGB or sRGB, and give them the files that way.
3) Shoot in RGB. Best for Print.
4) Ask your lab for printer profiles. This can be most helpful if they will supply you with the profiles they use.
But most of all --- calibrate your computer with software such as Eye One Match. It makes a huge difference, our monitors change subtly but continually.
