The 30D is a new model, and I've heard of them having a few minor problems.

I would buy the 20D. It's been around for a while now, and the prices are begining to come down now that a new model has hit the market.

I have looked into both. The 30d gives one a few more frames per second and a larger LCD. A few other minor things -for a two or three hundred dollar premium. With that, you can buy yourself the 20d plus a lense of some type. I think I would go with the 20d.

There's not much difference among the two. They both have the same number of megapixels and the same digital sensor. They are equally responsive, and both feature a 9-point autofocus system. They use the same batteries and the same memory cards. The 30D does offer a larger screen though.

I'm hearing in other forums that the 30D's are experiencing "noise" problems with the sensors.

A couple of posters over at the Popular Photography website forum have already sent their cameras back to canon because of excessive noise in the sensors.
It seems to be a fairly common problem from what i have read.

same sensor as the 20d though, maybe a fluke.

Why would I go the 20D when this camera has just come out with better on offer, I could not get hold of a 20D anyway. I feel a little better now having spoken to a few owners, some who say this camera blows away the 20D. Ive also seen photos and the noise at 3200 ISO was not too bad!!!! Apparenty there may have been a small batch of them with a mild dust problem and as the sensor is the same as the 20D I believe similar things happened with that model. This post from one person i spoke to sums up the camera.

My 30d continues to amaze me at how little noise I can get from it even up to 800asa and deliberately trying exposures that I thought would show noise. I ran a a series of available light tests in a pretty mono colour low light sort of environment at asa ranges from 100 to 1600 asa and was astounded. In fact, at 400asa I had to struggle to find any obvious noise at all.

I"m an old medium format film user (and loved it) but you will never get me back there again. I reckon the 30d is the greatest camera I have ever owned (45 years ago a Brownie Starlet 127) - can't change asa on the fly with film cameras, and just so much more.

WRONG!!!! the 20d gets 5fps, the 30d gets 3fps. only MAJOR difference is the lcd size

I too am faced with the same dilemma. The 30D has a few improvements over the 20D. Are the extras found on the 30D worth the price difference? Do we want the latest & greatest? I suppose it comes to value for the dollar. Personally, getting a 20D plus a nice piece of glass tempting.

Those of us considering a 20D need to hurry up & decide pretty quick. If we wait too long, we won't be able to get a 20D. Then our choice will be made for us.

I think you need to have a read of the specs on the 30D.

Continuous mode capture: 5fps up to 30 frames (11 frames in RAW mode) for the 30D

for the 20D its Continuous mode capture: 5fps up to 23 frames (6 frames in RAW mode)

very similar really, the 30D is an awesome camera, Im loving mine, noise has been no issue and the best thing for me is the fact that I can just keep shooting without any lag and the start up time is the fastest of any camera I know. I would have been as happy with a 20D but could not get a hold of one.

two very good reviews on both these excellent camera are here
