Zoom lens for Rebel XT
I am looking to take close up shots similar in size to "in god we trust" written on a U.S. dime. What lens options do I have for the Rebel XT to accomplish this?

For that small an item, we are probably not talking zoom, but rather macro. I got the 100mm Canon Macro as a birthday gift. Check out my gallery for some idea of magnification. An alternate would be to buy a 50mm macro and then a 2x adapter or extension tubes.

Thanks for your advice...your pictures are magnificent, a joy to look at!
Any idea on what prices I'm looking at with that 50mm and 100mm? Anywhere you might refer me to purchase either of them from?
Thanks for your help.

I too have the Canon 100mm F2.8 macro USM lens, but you don't need the 50mm macro in order to use extension tubes. The 100mm will cost you around $469, but the Kenko extension tubes which are a set of three tubes that when locked together will form 68mm of extension. You can use one, two or three of them, it's really up to you. The Kenko tubes are very reasonably priced at $159, so you might check them out at B&H Photo in New York. B&H is a very reputable camera store to deal with from my point of view.

Some of the photos in my gallery were shot with the 100mm, so you can see what you think.

Good luck,

Ponder (Dave) and I are pretty much in agreement. BTW the 50mm is about half the price of the 100.
Another good store I use is Adorama. I think it is Adorama.com
