Question Olympus E-330 why so expansive?

well ive been looking for my second digital camera, first i tought i will buy miself the well knows Cannon 350D. but i didn't buy it since it didn't had a "live feed"(can take photos by looking tru LCD screen) programe. and now i came acros a good camera that has this function. But what trubles me is that its quite expansive for its resolution and megapixels, you can get a better camera with same price(image quality).

is this because this is a brand new model and all new model are more expansive, or is it the function "live feed" so expansive to instal in an "good" camera.

lets see Olympus E-330 stats
price: Price (street) US$1049

Max resolution 3136 x 2352

Effective pixels 7.4 million

this to things are most important in image quality if im not wrong.

and now the cannon 350D

Price (street) US$686 (alot lower the Olympus E-330=

Max resolution 3456 x 2304

Effective pixels 8.0 million

i just gave one camera to compare but there are alot more cameras that have beter resolutiona and higer megapixels then Olympus E-330 and cost about 400$ less.

so can you tell me why is Olympus E-330 so expansive?

im still going to buy it tough since it is the only "better" kind of camera that has "live feed function".

thank you for all your answears

The E330 is a superb camera. I'm tempted myself. The reason it is so expensive is probably for a number of reasons. First off it has only just been released. The price will come down given time. Secondly the live view requires two sensors instead of the usual one which will add to the manufacturing costs. Finally this is the first DSLR camera with full colour live view so Olympus are probably using that as an excuse to push the initial price up. It might be worth waiting a little if you want the price to drop but if I had a spare £800 lying around I would buy one in a second. You may want to start thinking about lenses depending on the type of shooting you do.

Which one...

You can check ths link to see the difference between E330 and 350D.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/com...30&show=all

They highly recommend 350D while only recommend E330. You can check their in depth review to see sample shots and see the difference with each other.

If I were to choose I'll pick 350D.

The closest focusing distance of the 14-45mm lense is 0.38m or 38cm.

The more expensive 14-54mm lense has a closest focusing distance of 0.22m or 22cms. This lense is much more expensive though.

If you purchase the EX-25 extension tube as well then you can use that with the 14-45mm lense and can get a closest focusing distance of around 15cm. UK price for the extension tube is around £90

50m Macro lense is superb quality. Has a closest focusing distance of 24cm and can also be used with the EX-25. UK cost about £350

One thing to remember when you get an E330 is the 14-45 and 40-150mm lenses produce very good results as far as kit lenses go and in my opinion are some of the best kit lenses out there. They are not pro quality lenses and have their limitations but are capable of superb results. Another reason why the price is a little higher.

Here's a link to any info you might need on the Olympus lense range.

http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/dslr_6756.htm

Remember also because of the 2x crop factor this in effect doubles the 35mm equivalent image magnification. In short you don't have to get as close as you need to with other cameras to get the same magnification.

Here's the Olympus details on the E330

Sort of. In short if macro or close up work is your thing then there are plenty of options out there for the E system. If I was buying the E330 I would look very carefully at trying to get the two lense kit option. 14-45mm and 40-150mm as it's great value for money. If macro is your thing then I would suggest either purchasing the EX-25 extension tube as well or including either the 50mm macro or 35mm macro with your kit. The 35mm macro is quite cheap but again excellent quality. Sigma have also released a 105mm and 150mm macro lenses. It all depends on your starting budget and style of shooting.

The recommended price for the E-330 was quite a shock to me as well, I expected it to be priced just ahead of the E-500, something like £600-650. I guess Olympus must be 'testing the water' to see if the pros are attracted to it with it's unique liveview LCD screen -- and if they are then they'll willingly pay a pro-level price for it.

I don't think it will work out like that. Most pros already have a lot of expensive canon or nikon glass running into several thousand pounds. They aren't going to buy into a totally different system and have to start buying a whole new set of lenses again just so they can have an SLR with liveview. Even pros have a spending limit - as well as common sense.

The bottom line is that Oly will be forced to drop the price of their E-330, for despite it's high price-tag it's basically a re-styled E-300 with the addition of a preview LCD. It will ultimately have to compete with the most popular budget-priced SLRs (since it can't beat them on image quality which is what matters most) and will therefore have to be priced accordingly if it's to sell in any great numbers. It's certainly not worth it's current asking price in my view, and I'm speaking as a contented Olympus owner (not the E-330!).
