Rebel XT and 70-200mm which one

I have been bitten by the let's spend money that you shouldn't bug. I want I new zoom in the 70-200mm range. I am looking at the Canon 70-200mm L f4 and the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8. I can get the Canon for about $600 then the tripod mount is another add on or I can get the Sigma for $738. I tried shooting basketball and it wasn't a pretty sight with my old film zoom. I was told that the Canon wouldn't handle the lighting since it was an f4. I could always bump up the ISO. However I like the Sigma because on portraits it would work beautiful for blurring the background.

So suggestions?
