Shootem.......Your telling us we do not have the right to go back and forth on a subject unless we post photo's? Having a discussion is not stirring the pot. This is harmless and fun. You may be reading something into the posts. I'm not sure. But I don't think anyone is upset, unless you are.
Lady yes she has a new NIKON 8700 digital. She may not be a photographer at heart but at least she wanted to give it a go. At this point like you she is "against learning". Both of the photo's I posted had been photshopped as I did state when I posted them. For the record I did not shoot the photo.
Shame on Ray for not adding anything positive. He is now more guilty then the accused, as he is guilty of is own accusations. Oh and Ray, why do you find the need to cuss?
At any rate this has been a fun thread. It got some people out of the I agree with everything politically correctness and they gave an opinion. How refreashing

learning...
Hi Sw2cam, I think if your daughter give it a go she must be ready to explore the field of photography. I only started in photography the past few months and the guys here in bytephoto helps me alot in improving my techniques through thier comments. After all judging photos are subjective and men find it easy to see mistakes from other than thiers. Maybe you could ask your daughter to join in bytephoto so we can help each other to grow.

sw2cam, I dont know anything about the kind of camera your step Daughter has just got, I do know that before I went to a DSLR I had a canon G3 prosumer digital, It was a great little camera and unlike a DSLR the camera itself boosted much of the photo in camera, that is saturaion, sharpness etc, I rarely touched many of the G3 images with photoshop.
However with the DSLR, the photos are a lot more bland in comparrison so i had to learn a little more about photo editing. My parents only went to digital last year and got a Canon A85, they never edit the shots and it produces some very nice images.
Hopefully your step daughters camera will be similar to my G3 and she wont have to do much editing. I cant see how looking at some beautiful work could put off a true photo lover, for years I looked at photographers amazing work and still do, i know I will probably never get to be as good a photographer but I will have a good time trying.

I don't look at online photo contests because I could care less what people do in PhotShop or other software that repairs poor pictures. So cheat all you like.
Photoshoped images used for enhancing the photos colors, contrast, are just improving your photo. Now cloning out things that were thre may be borderline, but editing your colors in photoshop is no diffreent than a photographer adding extra chemicals to there picture when developing film, to add contrast, sepiatone or what not. Not cheating at all Just enhancing the affect of the photo.

I read through your posts, and responses. I do understand where your coming from when a photo is over done in photoshop. I likd your boat example. but this quote from you,,
quote: Photoshop is not photography, or developing.
I think that photoshop can be used for developing. Here is my reasoning to support my statement. there are photographers with bottemless pockets that can afford the L glass and so on. Some of the more expensive lenses have better contrast, better sharpness than some people that can only afford a $150 dollar lens. Some lenses are crap but that all some people have to shoot with. Now if you can sharpen a picture, change your white balance with photoshop to get a natural result then I think photshop can be used for developing. Just like putting a warming filter at the end of your lens to get a warmer picture. Some people don't have them so they add a warming filter in photoshop. Just as somone would do when developing film. If your out on a Hot sunny day and some of your images come out with blown highlites, then why not use photoshop to improve it? So many ways photoshop can be used for developing without making the image look over processed. Even the professionals take bad pics and need to process a not so great pic. so yes Photoshop can be used for developing. thats only my opinion. I respect yours but just wanted to express how photoshop can be used for developing. I for one like my pictures to look more natural. Do people go to far? yes.
