How did you get your ds=5080 to work as a webcam? Are you using Windows XP? Lots of us can't get ours to work and would be really interested to hear how you did it.

I think the camera only works as a PC cam on windows 98, it needs drivers to work as a cam on XP (I believe) and there are no xp drivers on the CD that comes with the camera.
I hope I'm wrong but I don't think I am.
I've lost the manual now, but I believe it does specify the drivers must be installed for the camera to work, it gives no instructions that indicate the camera will work without the drivers (afair)
the other applications in which it links with a PC it specifies do not install the drivers for XP.
something I just thought, and you may want to try, if you connect the camera up, switch it on, select camera and then go through control panel, troubleshoot/add new hardware.
it MAY pick it up that way, although I think I would have tried that : /

The control panel way doesn't work either When I asked Premier support about using the DS-5080 as a PC cam on Windows XP, they just sent me the drivers which are on the CD. Needless to say, they didn't work either.
The manual does say the drivers are for Win98 only, then on the next page when you want to use it as a PC cam, the manual says install the drivers !!! Maybe I will try Premier support one more time.

I figured it out (I think)
I used 1 usb port to connect to the camera.
I tried using the same port for the webcam function. no work.
after several weird fix attempts, I remembered my favourite usb fix (after reboot).
try another usb socket.
I don't know how it works, but it seems to so
I am happy.
can you guys try and use a different usb port and feedback whether it works or not?
maybe we have found a fix premier couldn't

Tried all different USB ports (both USB2 and USB1) also tried 2nd computer. Same results. Camera says 'connected to computer'; Camera shows up in device manager; but does not show in scanners and cameras; nor can any software find the camera (even Netmeeting as used in the manual).

strange. I have XP home SP1, maybe that would make a difference?
I installed one of the software programs, and installed the drivers on the CD (they say UBB/cam drivers, so I assume the drivers ARE needed in XP).
the fix I used (try different USB ports) isn't very reliable. kinda like windows.
anyway, for those of you not so lucky on the webcam front, using MSN messenger, the cam was pretty good.
the above is all I did to get the cam working (installed drivers, rebooted, installed Ulead software (can't recall which one it was) and then tried a different USB port.
the only fix I can think of now is pretty drastic for you guys, I know I wouldn't bother unless it was guaranteed to work (but it isn't) and that would be a rebuild (uninstall and reinstall xp)
it is possible the cam only works on XP or XP SP1?

That is on my list of things to try. I have a spare HDD which I can use to install vanilla XP SP1 and try the DS-5080 as a PC cam with that. Might be worth trying it with a vanilla XP SP2 just in case the camera is clashing with someting else on my PC.

hey, i thought you could use it as a webcam. hmmm
Whenever i connect the camera to my pc. on the screeen it says "connected to computer" but the pc says "USB malfunctioned Windows does not recognise" I use XP and its been working fine untill now. I got it from Tesco as well. My pendrive works in the same port, so it must be the camera. Its not even my camera its my bro's.
I tried trouble shooting, no help.
Any ideas???

Windows does not recognise
if windows does not recognise the camera and show that message then it may well be a case of taking it back for a replacement, but before that a few questions, does your camera power on without being connected to your pc, does your camera charge up ok with the mains charger, if the answer is no to both these questions then the camera needs replacing, take it back to your tesco and providing you have proof of purchase, tesco will only be too happy to give you a replacement, the same thing happened to me, i had just shot a video of my wee girl singing a song, i connected the camera to the pc, i then browsed to the video file and moved the file to my hard drive, after i moved the file my camera didnt not: power up, charge up or connect to my pc, though when i tried connecting it would throw up the same message you mention, tesco replaced it no probs.......

Well I installed Windows XP pro SP1 on a blank HDD and the DS-5080 still doesn't work as a PC cam. It shows up in device manager, but not in scanners and cameras and it can't be used. In contrast, it works in Pct bridge mode even though the camera screen says 'error'. Maybe I need to do a swap at Tesco for another one?

Have just got a 512M SD card to add to the DS-5080 (super price over at 7dayshop). Still no go as a PC cam with the card installed, but I get the 'lockup when switched on' problem even more. Thought maybe it was a power problem so tried it with the mains adaptor and still get problems Shame really, it is a really handy camera. Will have to see if Tesco can do a swap.

Hi Everyone
Help
I bought a Premier DS-5080 a couple of years ago. I played with it but found the storage too limiting, so I put it a side for a while.
Recently I purchased a 512 mb card for it, installed. Now when I switch the camera on it lights up for 10 to 5 seconds then goes dead. I have tried three sets of batteries but still the same. I have taken out the card, still the same.
Any ideas?
John

Well the DS-5080 has finally died. It refused to switch on either with or without the SD card, or with the AC adaptor. Took it back to Tesco and got a refund (they no longer stock it). Apparently, they have had a lot returned with battery / power faults. Got a Praktica dcz4.4 instead. Had to pay a bit more but it does have 3x optical zoom and will do 640x480 movies. Initial results are very impresive and it has got 4 built in games No PC-Cam facility though
