I am trying to connect my sons camera (Premier DS-5080) to the computer but when I try to install the usb drivers that came with the camera I keep getting the message that they are not compatable with windows xp. I have tried to search for new drivers but without success. I cannot get the camera to work with the pc although the camera LCD screen says 'connected to pc'. Can anyone help me out here and point me in the right direction please?

Hi there, connect your camera via the usb cable supplied, the camera will power up and give you a list of options, choose "disk drive" by pressing "ok" button on the camera, When you have the confirmation that your camera has established a connection to your pc go to "my computer" and you should see an icon called "removable drive" or "removable disk", double click this and you will see a folder, cant remember what the folders called, open the folder and you will see another folder called something like "camera100" or something, your images or videos are in this folder. Windows XP recognises this connection without the need for other drivers because as far as its concerned you have not connected a camera, you have connected a storage device which is indeed the memory that your pictures reside, think of it as a very small hard drive....

i am on my second DS-5080 as i foolishly left my first one which i had for about a year, in the pocket of my jeans which went through the washing machine , lol, i opened the casing and dried it out and amazingly enough it worked but only for about 2 weeks then it just failed to power up, on closer inspection, (being a computer hardware student) i found that the connection pins from the cameras processor to the circuit board had corroded and the corrosion grew to meet opposite poles which shorted the circuitboard. so i binned it.

The second DS-5080 that i bought 3 weeks ago worked fine up until today, i had just shot a video of my daughter singing a song and moved the video file over to my pc, after that the camera will now not: power up, establish a connection to my pc or charge from the mains power, i have tried everything, and its not like its the first file transfer i done with this camera, i have actively used it with no problem in the 3 weeks that i have had it. If anyone knows what the solution is to this, please let me know as i dont want to end up having to buy a 3rd camera.

If the DS-5080 won't power up, sounds like it is dead (or there is a battery problem) is it dead with both the battery and the AC adaptor?. When you binned your 1st camera, did you hang onto the battery??

I got my DS-5080 from tesco and it has a 1 year warranty. If it breaks down, i can take it back to tesco and get a replacement or a refund. Is that an option for you?

I bought mine at tesco too but have searched high and low for the reciept with no avail, it was bought with a credit card so im goning to try an use documentation from the credit card as my proof of purchase, do you think i will be successful???

as for the battery from the one i binned, it was slighty different from this one and used 2x aaa batteries, Model number DS-3081S. it was an earlier model bought in late 2004, it had silver trim with dark grey panels apart from that and the battery difference, the DS-3081S and DS-5080 are pretty much the same....

no power from AC adapter either........

Thanks Marc for your reply. I haven't tried to connect the camera using the disc drive option (why didn't I think of that?) thats why I couldn't see it in my computer I will try it out later this evening and I will post back to tell you how I got on.

By the way what do you think of the camera, is it any good? This camera belongs to my son and I myself have a ricoh RDC 6000, which I personally think is a load of rubbish. You really need to know about how to set it up etc (and I am just a novice) as the pics most of the time are not very clear. The DS-5080 looks straightforward enough to use and so far the pics have been pretty impressive.

I read that you have lost your receipt for your purchase at Tesco, well I'm pretty sure that if you take proof that you purchased it by credit card you shouldn't have a problem. Tesco are usually very good with returns.

Anyway thanks for the advice.

Hiya Mumsy, Im pretty sure the disc drive option will work ok but do post back so we all see that it did. ive just joined this forum and i am suprised at the response times to posts, other camera forums i joined previously aint so hot in that respect.

as for my receipt, i finally found it after ripping my office apart, lol, and i am going straight down there tomorrow morning as i really need a camera for my daughters birthday party this weekend.

I think the DS-5080 is a great little affordable camera and its size is perfect for me as i always have a camera with me when im out, just in case lol.

if you have a look at my gallery on this site, all pictures taken are using the DS-5080 and the former model DS-3081S. both cameras are moreless the same as far as picture quality is concerned. I dont mean to plug my own website but if you visit www.orillasound.co.uk and go to my links section you will find a link to "My Photobox" page which all pictures have been taken by the cameras mentioned above.

i read some reviews about your Ricoh RDC600 and it seems to be a good enough camera though i aint no professional, personally i dont like the look of the mode dial on top, in the DS-5080 the mode settings are adjustable digitally through an interface on the tft screen which means theres no need for such a dial.

Glad you found your receipt. You will need to get down to tesco pronto because the DS-5080 is in the xmas sale for about £37 so they mightnot have any left for a replacement. If they have, go for a refund of what you paid originally, then buy one of the sale ones and save some money

My DS-5080 had a funny 5 mins yesterday. I switched it on to take some photos, the green light came on but the screen stayed blank. I switched the camera off but the green light stayed on!! Eventually , the battery went flat and i put the camera on charge overnight. This morning, it is working perfectly again. Maybe I will put the receipt somewhere safe just in case LOL

My DS-3081S used to do that too, my solution was to just remove the batteries and put them back in again and it was fine, its as if it crashes for some reason, so i thought, remove and re-apply the power source like rebooting the device i suppose and it worked, it saves letting the battery go flat but i dont know if the data stored in memory would be comprimised by such an action so make sure you transfer your data to your pc before carrying out such actions, (i will not be held responsible for lost data or damages due to these comments) as im just telling you what worked for me. Personally i believe it has to do with the initial surge of power used when you first switch on which in turn could lead to malfunction of the cameras processor if the power isnt managed properly, on saying that, my DS-3081S did it quite often and it worked fine for the year i had it until the washing machine got it, lol.

Welcome to BytePhoto, I think you got a great deal, mine was purchased in the beginning of January at tesco and it was reduced from 65 to 40, i snapped it up, In January 2005 i purchased a "Premier DS-3081S" from the gadgetshop and that was reduced from 60 to 48, that was my first digital camera which sadly ended up in digi-cam heaven via a washing machine.............

I didnt know Premier did these cameras with such a low memory 3 and 4 mb, mine was a 14mb but i bought a 64mb sd card from ebay the other day (for a fiver) so now i can store more pictures at a higher resolution.

oh yeah...Tesco are doing good offers at moment.

I got the 128mb memory card for just £7 today. The 1gig was for 62, too much for me to spend on something I don't need.

Actually, looked online a bit earlier and saw that 1gig cards can be picked up for arond 40 pounds, even better than the infamous supermarket.

I didn't even think about the batteries much.
I was thinking when I got home that maybe have 2 AAA batteries is better for a cam' than the lith' one in the DS-5080.

Hmm.. in any case...tomorrow will take a few shots...and see how they turn out in the winter sun.

Hi there guys and gals. I just found you, and boy am I glad I did. Like many of you, I bought my DS-5080 at Tesco for less than £40 - and I've picked up the 128MB SD card for £7! (Might pick up another for my soon-to-be-delivered Tom Tom One!)

Some things for which I'd be really grateful for some help.

1. I've lost the damn manual! Would any of you be prepared to send me a copy of yours? I read somewhere on the web that the manual is supposed to be on the installation CD - but it isn't. I'm not exactly lost without it - but I'd really like to try some of the cool stuff it looks like the camera will do. If someone could volunteer to send me an electronic copy (either a scan of the manual, or an electronic file) I'd be thrilled to bits. Who knows, I might have something you'd want to swap for it? :-)

2. I've been thrilled with what I've done with the camera so far, but just one thing bugs me. It seems to take forever for the LCD screen to 'lock on' to the image - to gradually get lighter, and then focus. Is this just mine - or is it a characteristic of the camera? It makes taking 'instant' shots pretty tricky...

3. Battery life seems rather poor. I haven't scientifically measured it - that's based on gut feel

If any of you kind people can help me, I'd be eternally grateful. Thanks! Cheers, Ian.

*the camera works superb as a webcam on either msn/yahoo messenger. Quality that any ordinary webcam could never attain.
For 30 pounds, its well worth the price just a webcam. Tesco are still well stocked up with both the 3mb and 5mb version (well, my local tesco at least).

Thanks. In fact, overnight, I received the manual from Premiere - you can't download it, but I contacted their tech support and they sent me one. Tesco are no longer doing 20% off the camera or the SD card, so they've gone up to around £50 and around £9 respectively. Still interested in any comments re how long it take sthe camera to lock on to an image, and on battery life.

hi all,
i have been trying to use my DS-5080 as pc cam, but even after installing the usb driver from the provided cd and the messege 'connected to computer' on camera screen, computer is not able to find any pc cam? it has happened before when i first used it as pc cam on the same computer few months back but later on it worked (honestly dont how it started working). this time it has completely refused to recognised it as pc cam? can anyone give me some tips about how to make it work???
