Just curious which software you use, and why you have chosen it.

Image Management ... ACDSee 5.01
Web Design .... Dreamweaver
Vector illustrations ... Canvas 9, illustrator
Simple image editing ... FotoCanvas
Detailed Digital imaging ... PhotoShop or Paint Shop Pro
Presentations (Kiosk) ... Macromedia Director
Presentations (Client) ... Macromedia Flash, Director or FotoAngelo
Print Media ... Adobe Indesign or Canvas 9
Digital video editing ... After Effects, AVID, Priemiere
3D animation ... Maya, Bryce or Xara
2D animation ... Flash + Swish
Sound Editing ... Sound Forge, Pro Tools
Thats all I can think of, most I learned at school and actually had to use at work. Some I used at school and have used in my own Business
Find what you like to do, find the price you can afford (dont go the dark route... even if you do ... you will eventually have to go legit)
Good Luck

Software,
I've been a proud owner of the Adobe products since they first came out on a Mac..in what?..'88
Photoshop
Premiere
After Effects
I've received a bunch of free/complimentary programs from different companies when I've purchased scanners/cameras/hard drives/scsi....firewire cards.....but the above are still the ones I use the most.

Software I use
I use IrfanView 3.80 for resizing and viewing, quick and dirty touch ups
NikonView 6 for some viewing
IMatch for photo file management
I want PhotoShop for heavy duty processing, but I'm trying to wait for version 8 to come out because their upgrade prices are so high

I use photoshop 7 for virtually everything. My wife prefers PS Elements because it's easier to use. I mainly only use Irfanview to browse pics.

I use Photoshop 7 for almost everything the two exceptions are
Qimage for 90% of my printing
And don’t laugh I use my Corel Photo-Paint for my screen caps I find it’s easier for me when I’m working in PS7 and need a screen cap for say tutorial to simply > use the key "print screen" and just keep pasting them over in Corel … and when I have finished in PS7 I will go back to Corel to crop and save the caps …. So it’s a little ironic that all of the screen caps in this PS7 tutorial are the product of Corel

Photo-brush
A little known but very good program
Not free but cheap at $38 direct on web
excepts PS plugins and even searches your drive for them
Uses less memory
The only thing that could be considered a shortcoming is, it does not have levels. Though I don't find this a problem because of the use of brushes. and this is one of the reasons that it is not a pig for memory.

I am new to photography and to this forum. I have a Nikon D70 and am still in awe of the many things yet to learn. Presently I am using Nikon View but some years ago I used to design and publish corporate newsletters and Adobe Pagemaker was my program, even before, when it was still Aldus. Pagemaker was a great tool and provided everything that I needed and I would suppose that Photoshop will do likewise. I plan to buy it but for now the camera has a steep enough learning curve and I hear that Photoshop has one too. One at a time. I am glad to be here and hope to learn from those of you who will share what you know. Best to you all.
Jerry
