I not quire sure why you would buy the 18-70 if you are already going to own the 18-55.
the diff between 55-70 (only 15mm) isnt worth a few hundred dollars.
See if you can buy the D50 with the 18-70 lens instead. I have heard some that do that.
The 18-55 is really the equivalent of 1.5 times that.. which is only 27-82.5
The 18-70 is really the equivlent ot 27-105mm
you cant really judge what 6times zoom is because that depends on what mm they are starting out with.
Once you buy a DSLR, you dont really figure zoom out by 6 times, 10 times etc.
Here is a picture I took in 2003 with my Oly C750 which had a 10x zoom.

then the same scene om 2004 with my Nikon D70 where I used my 70-300 zoom where I think the actually zoom was somewhere between 200-300 which calculates 1.5 to, 300-450
This might give you an idea. I was standing on a bridge where looking at this house would be small in comparison.
