Question Can Anyone Recommend a good Zoom for Canon 350D

I recently became the proud owner of a Canon 350d this came with a 18-55 Lens, While this lens is good for most things I'd Like to invest in a zoom lens without spending an arm and a leg on it, as I'm an amateur photographer not a pro.

Can anybody reccomend a Lens, or even a third party company that can be trusted for quality similar to canon lenses

Hi
What is your budget? I would suggest Tamron 28-75mm
for general purpose photography.

1 step lower to that would be a Canon 28-105mm USM II lens.

I hope that helps.

Thanks
Leo

For what purpose do you need the zoomlens ? For nature / sports, you might want a 200 or 300 mm. SO give us a hint, so we can help you better.

And being an amateur does not mean you should not settle for less quality lenses :-)

Thanks for the Replies!

Nature will be my focus,
I think the zoom is necessary, as you can never get close enough to natures timid little creatures while removing lense cover, selecting the relevant settings and focusing.

I think the highest I would need would be 200mm, but then again I haven't had the opportunity to see the zoom on a 200mm.

What I am going to do is also go down to the local camera shop and try out some lense's, but I will be sticking to a quality manufacturer, as a friend invested in what looked like a bargain but turned out to be a badly desinged lense with bad optics.

If youu buy a good quality lens, it keeps most of its value in case you want to sell it again.
I used a 80-300 (the cheap EF lens as leftover from my film camera time) for animal shootings, see those pictures below on my site.

For those who want to know the conclusion to this post.

I eventually got a Cannon EF 90 to 300 zoom lens.

It's great for getting that little bit closer but you need to use a tripod if you've zoomed right in, as it doesn't have image stabilization.

I thought it was good value at 200 Euro (note: I live in an Expensive country, so this lens may be cheaper else where)
