580 ex speedlite

I have purchased 2 580 speedlites for use on my 1ds and I can not get them to fire on manual setting or multi setting. It will fire on the ettl setting, but I don't see much differance in the picture compared to with out the flash firing. I had a 550 speedlite and it worked get. The flashes were bought at two differant camera shops.
