"Hidden score" voting
I really don't like this new 'hidden score' voting system for the weekly final 6.
There must be a better way to judge the final 6.

much better
Koukla,
I noticed they are hidden as well.
I think it works much better this way.
There are people here that would vote just to play games and watch 2 pictures up their scores one at a time each week.
I've seen it happen many times. Also if someone sees that one image has all the votes, they might just be swayed to vote for it since they think it might win anyway...
or go the opposite and vote for another image so that the one that might win wont beat out their own.
Maybe you voted in one of the ways I mentioned above.. is that why you dont like them hidden now?
I always picked what I thought should be the winner the day the 6 were posted, but would never vote for it until the last day and sometimes only an hour before closing so as not to sway others to vote or not vote for the same image I think should win
A lot less "cheating" going on when you cant see the votes.
I was on another site for a short time that also hid the voting scores.

I also think the hidden scores should be better. Should be fairer. Time will tell.

I have no problem with the hidden scores during the vote, however I would like to view the percentages after the contest winner is chosen. I cant seem to find them

This is the type of comment that I find troublesome because of the implications it places on everyone who is part of this website....I would hope that it is not true but if it is....can it be clarified?

Parklawn, just by watching the scores the past couple weeks how 2 images keep one upping each other, tells you somebody must be playing games. This isnt new to this site in the 2+ years since 2003 I have been here nor other websites.
It might not even be people who currently participate in the contest, but other users who have in the past.
This isnt the only site that has changed to votes not being seen. I have seen it on quite a few photo sites now.
A number of the others I have won on do the same even for the monthly contests. You see all the finalists but no one knows the final results until the end of the finals.
I think it makes perfect sense to hide them.
Its very easy for someone to see someone winning that they may not want to win and vote for another.
See my comments above

I have no problems with what you saw about the finals contest voting and there may very well be people who vote against people who maybe winning or vice-versa...... I really don't have a problem with that..............
My concern was and still is the comment made about "cheating" go on.....
You did not address that or attempt to clarify.....that is what I have a problem with...........not the rest.
To imply cheating is a serious comment and I would have hope that you would have clarified it or perhaps even withdrawn it. The administrators might be the ones who could tell us with more clarity if there is anything unethical happening.................
Just how I feel for whatever it is worth.

Its easy. Just go back to the closed poll thread and all the vote totals and percentages are shown after the voting is over. At least, it is working that way on my browser.
If that doesn't work for you, try holding down the shift key while clicking your browser's reload button.

Ray, I am not implying you or and particluar person here is "cheating"
I'm guessing this is the only website you post at, because if you posted a lot of other places in the past 3 years you would have seen the same as I have
I am on other sites where if someone is up for photo of the week, there is one particular person who sends messages to all their friends saying "my image is up for potw, vote for it and i'll vote for yous"
Sad to say this person is an adult close to my age and not a teenager or in their 20's. not that it makes a difference mind you.
I've also had photo friends from other sites send out mass emails to everyone in their address book telling them to create accounts at a site that they or a friend is on just to vote for their picture.
It really made me mad that this was happening and of course I DID NOT create an account just to vote for someones piccture.
If they cant win on their own merit, then whats the point.
This subject has been discussed at a couple of the other websites I have been on in the past.
There's another website I posted only once to with an image I had won twice before with at other sites. Even though it didnt win at Byte, many love it here as well. I posted it at the other site for a contest and I got lots of votes, trouble is they were all 1's the lowest possible score. Obviously people were logging on and givng all the better images 1's they thought would beat theirs.
Needless to say I never posted there again.
I think the admins have every right to change the way scores are viewed during the contest finals. They pour many hours of their time into a wonderful site like this one.
It was a good move on their part and I'm all for it. ;)
Horray!!! for the admins

Thanks
as to the cheating, I cant see how as we only get one vote, unless of course there are people that will vote against a photo just because of who is winning. If thats the case maybe it is a good Idea to hide the poll, does not bother me in the least, just interested in the final scores. Helps to work out what kind of photos appeal to people and for me that helps in other kinds of photo competitions here at home, it all depends on who the judges are thats all.. I believe that the voting/judging really is based on what appeals in 80% of photo competitions not how good a photo is.

having just read the post above my last one explains a lot, Thankyou
From now on if I get a shot in the top six, I will not vote at all that week, seems fair to me as you have to be unbiased

with the word cheating, I mean voters being swayed by how they see others voting for the final 6.
I'm sure it must have happened in the past where voters see one or even two images with the highest scores. And for whatever reason they dont want these images to win, maybe because their image never made it to the final six.or any reason they just vote for another image that obviously wont catch up to the winner.
Maybe I think too much lol, probably because I have helped programmers in writing systems on websites at work to come up with every possible scenario to prevent user errors and data integrity.

I am really pleased that the votes are hidden. And now that last week's voting polls are revealed we can see that three had very close high votes. And no one had a clue how anyone was voting! That is completely fair I think. No hanky panky.
Also it seems more people voted--- 38---than I have seen for a long while. I think it is worthy to see afterwards , how the votes went, if anything , out of curiosity...and as aladyforty said, it may give a clue on what will win...subject matter etc. Although I think that really varies with the pictures of the week.
Big Rah for the administrators for doing this!
