Wow,seems I've opened a can of worms.
We all have different views on how the final 6 should be judged.
I was simply stating my opinion on the new method.
Have a happy day everyone & go back to your cameras & start snapping more pics

I think it's a super idea. I must admit, I myself am occasionally influenced by the one that's in the lead especially if I'm having a hard time making up my mind between two. I don't think it's consciously 'cheating', just subsconsciously 'leaning towards'. Not seeing the percentages means I really do have to make up my own mind. Great idea.

The hidden score voting gets my vote too. Great move by the admins.

Don't stop at hidding just the scores.
In the end there are only 25 to 35 votes cast... what is the big deal. To be honest, I think this whole scoring and voting for competition is just a pain in the butt. It has caused the most controversy on this site and for the most part is counter productive to building a photo community of learners. The scoring is ok but the competition taints it. Suddenly my score is measured against some artificial rating system that is interpreted subjectively. The only success that it has caused is ****ing people off. I think scoring for competition should be discontinued.
True, there are members here who take the competition seriously and post their images on every contest sites on the web so they can keep track of the meaningless wins. What is the point other than to get artificial bragging rights? Gosh, if you want competition then enter into a juried contest… better yet, a juried contest associated with artisan fair. First you have to compete to get a booth in the fair and if your stuff is good enough to get the booth then your judge is the open market. Now that’s competition.
It would be one thing if the participation in this competition was growing, but it is not. I think the highest number of votes for any competition has been around 60 and that was years ago. Everything has stayed pretty static at around 25 to 35 voters for some time. Is it just me who thinks all of this negative energy, and bickering around a competition that gets at most 35 voters is silly?
The point is, in my opinion the site more about learning and receiving feedback on images. Please leave everything else about the site...the comments. the scoring, the posting two images a week but HIDE the competition. I mean, hide the whole thing!! It does not add any value here. In the two years that I have been a member of this site, I have found the competition to be detrimental to community and probably the biggest pain for the administrators to oversee.

You don't want to have a POTW at all?
With the quality of your work, you would stand a chance at that artisan Fair thing... but what about people like me who still have a long long way to go? I think the POTW is a very good idea. Winning a competition with 30 or so voters may not mean anything, but at least it gives a sense of satisfaction. I've never made it to the finals (yet), but when I do, I'll at least know that a couple of voters (some of whom are VERY talented IMO) thought my work was good.
Removing the POTW contest would make things really boring... I wouldn't be motivated to take pics at all if all I was going to get was a score and comments, nothing more. What's the point if I don't know how good my work is compared to the others?
Hehe if anybody is wondering how come I'm posting on the forums (I never do, do I?), it's because I have semester holidays... basically I have too much free time on my hands ;)

I dont have much problem with the whole way that this site is run. I only enter photos for competition on this site and very occasionally on one other. BUT if this site must change then I think the site should run along the lines of "Steves digicams" they have a photo of the day and then out of them a photo of the month. However I dont think it would be good to go with the same idea of entry where you submit a photo and the people who run the site choose the photo of the day and month upon entry. The Idea should be to drop the ratings and allow the moderators to judge the top 6 photos and then the winner announced by them each week which they judge.
The rest of the time photos submitted should be treated the same way as on "steves digicams" open for comments and help when asked for. Makes for a much more friendly internet community.

I've been away for Thanksgiving and didnt get back online until today.
Leo,
I'm certain your comment there are members here who take the competition seriously and post their images on every contest sites on the web so they can keep track of the meaningless wins. What is the point other than to get artificial bragging rights?
was directed right at me.
You took that comment right from my website
http://www.pbase.com/reflectionsbyruth/contestwins
I really think that comment was uncalled for.
I have been in 2 juried contests at a local art gallery. Last year my image won for a category but this year it did not. I didnt get to attend this year since I was on vacation, but my friend who both of us entered the past 2 years did attend. He called me on my cell phone to tell me how much attention my image was getting. He said people walked by his yet stood at mine for the longest time talking about how much they liked it.
I pay more attention to the general public and how they react to my images than some juror who just decided she doesnt like anything that is a reflection.
As for the "meaningless wins" thats a matter of opinion. Those wins got me noticed and opened quite a few doors where I have now been published in a VA mag, NJ mag and about to be published in a local NJ newspaper in the next month. I also sold quite a few of my images amongst other artists that were painters.
Just this past week I had a gentleman who owns a restaurant in NJ see my work on Pbase and said he would like to hold an event at the local art gallery where I bring my pictures and he supply the wine and food. Also a VA County magazine wants me to participate in their 2006 photography competition. All this because they saw my "meaningless wins" online. I have heard of others who experienced the same at being noticed.
I pay more attention to the publics reaction to my work than I do some jurers.
For many new photographers here on Byte, its those small wins that give them incentive to keep going and get better. They have a lot of meaning to many and to label them ""Meaningless Wins" is wrong in my opinion.
Just my 1$ <== inflation lol

Ruth, you have GOT to be kidding me. First off, I went to the link above. I see no derogatory comments... only postitve. My guess it that what ever comment you're referring to is hidden from public view. I'm sorry dear, you take this much too personally. This has little to do with you. It has more to do with a pattern over a two year period.
Come on Ruth, you've been here since the beginning, through a wave of folks who took the competition so seriously that they had to create alias accounts to vote down the competition and vote themselves up. We are not talking an isolated time but several!
It seems every month there is a spat about something to do with the competition. Votes are inflated, the images are doctored, etc, etc. How many folks over the last few years have blown out of here because of the competion and the pettiness of it all. How many great photographers have left because of the competition \
All this so someone can secure a win with maybe 10 votes (there is at most 35 people voting total).
How can you possibly think this was directed only at you? ***Sigh***
This was my point...

Sorry Leo,
Its just that you used the exact words that were on my gallery "This is just to help me keep track of some of the online photography contests"
about keeping track and was sure you had seen my gallery and that was what gave you the thought you expressed.
Sorry if I misunderstood.
I know it has to do with the pattern that has happened over the past 2 years. Many of us have seen the alias's lol. Which we can laugh at now but was pretty sad to think the people themselves would do so they would win.
Guess I'm stressed out a lot lately with work and family health matters that things effect me different
Sorry

Ruth, I have never been to that page until today. PBase is a big place and I have many in my favorites list. Though I do find it odd... if it is "just to help YOU keep track".. then why isn't the gallery hidden. Come on, you've gotten some recognition and you've created a gallery to showcase it. Good for you.
