Adobe(R) Font Folio(TM) featuring the Adobe Type Library in OpenType(R) format

SAN JOSE, CalifAug. 11, 2003 Adobe Systems Incorporated the leader in network publishing, today introduced a new version of Adobe(R) Font Folio(TM) featuring the Adobe Type Library in OpenType(R) format on one CD-ROM. The Adobe Font Folio (OpenType Edition) product contains more than 2,000 fonts in OpenType format, which allows for richer linguistic support and more advanced typographic control in any print, Web or dynamic media project. Adobe also announced the availability of a new special version with a 10-computer license, making it more affordable for small design shops to access the entire Adobe Type Library.

Adobe and Microsoft Corporation created the OpenType font format to improve cross-platform document portability and simplify font management, by introducing one font file that works on both the Macintosh and Windows platforms. Creative professionals benefit from extended foreign language support and the inclusion of expert typographic glyphs, such as small caps, old style figures and swashes, in many OpenType fonts.

"The OpenType font format is much more convenient than the old Type 1 or TrueType fonts," said David Blatner, co-author of Real World InDesign, InDesign for QuarkXPress Users and Real World Photoshop. "With Adobe's new Font Folio in OpenType format, I love having large character sets in the same font instead of having to work with a whole array of related font files."

Advancing the Art of Typography

Creative professionals, corporate publishing offices and service bureaus will appreciate Font Folio's variety of typefaces, including standard workhorse text typefaces and innovative display typefaces. The Adobe Font Folio product includes a selection of Adobe Original typefaces -- historical revivals and innovative new designs such as Adobe Garamond(R), Warnock(R) and Brioso(TM) -- as well as ornament and symbol fonts, and a versatile collection of handwriting fonts. Font Folio contains several sets of "Opticals" fonts, which include separate, optimized font designs for use at different point sizes, such as when typesetting captions, text, subheads and display headlines. In addition, many OpenType fonts contain an expanded glyph repertoire that may include expert typographic glyphs, such as small capitals, old style figures, swashes, proportional and lining numerals, stylistic alternates, titling capitals, non-standard ligatures and fractions.

"OpenType fonts allow customers the flexibility to use a wide range of new characters, expand their creative possibilities, and reliably deliver their work across computing platforms," said Jim Heeger, senior vice president of Creative Professional Products at Adobe. "The art of typography is central to publishing, and our new version of Font Folio gives creative professionals the tools to make their magazines, newspapers and Web pages stand out from the crowd."

Better Multi-Lingual Support

Customers with international publishing requirements can take advantage of the Adobe Font Folio (OpenType Edition) product's extensive language support and the OpenType format's use of Unicode, a platform-independent text-encoding standard that supports virtually all of the world's languages and provides better text representation and transport. Standard OpenType fonts from Adobe cover most Western languages and many OpenType "Pro" fonts support central and eastern European languages, as well as Greek and Cyrillic. Adobe Font Folio (OpenType Edition) contains a collection of Japanese fonts in OpenType format.

OpenType fonts from Adobe can be used in documents alongside existing PostScript, Type 1 and TrueType fonts. OpenType fonts are natively supported in Mac OS X, Windows(R) 2000 and Windows XP. Older operating systems obtain OpenType support through Adobe Type Manager(R) (ATM(TM)) Light, a free system software component download available at www.adobe.com/products/atmlight/main.html. OpenType fonts are also supported by leading font management applications.

Pricing and Availability

The Adobe Font Folio (OpenType Edition) product is available immediately and will be sold primarily through the Adobe store at www.adobe.com, Adobe retail and licensing channels, and includes a standard 20-computer license for US$8,999. License extensions are also available and Font Folio is included in Adobe's transactional and contractual licensing programs. Upgrade pricing from Font Folio versions 8 or 9 to Font Folio OpenType Edition is US$2,499. Adobe is also releasing a special 10-computer license of Font Folio OpenType Edition for smaller design workplaces that is available for US$4,999. International English versions are available where localized versions are not sold.
