Welcome!
Welcome to Byte James!
I'm not that expert in it but Digital Cameras (pocket/compact type) are also know as the point and shoot camera. Meaning the camera settings is automatically adjust by the on board computer in your Digicam. Some of this has functions like the SLR but not that fully equiped for professional photography.
There are also SLR-Like Camera. They are camera like Kodak Z740, Z7590 or Canon S2 IS and Sony DSC-H1. These are the high end of compact or point and shoot camera. These are almost near the functionality of the SLR like PASM mode.
SLR Cameras are the most versatile camera. You can change lenses to fit your needs and you have bunch of settings to adjust to satisify your artistic side in taking pictures. DSLRs have high power on board chips to process the image and they have a larger and more powerful sensor.
You can try to look at www.dpreview.com and see the difference in Compact, SLR-Like and SLR.
hope this help

HI , I would be interested if you live in Canada but if you are in the USA it costs too much for shipping and duty etc. You don't have a location listed . :-)
