This is a little different from hand coloring but I think it’s pretty cool

In the original photo the back ground color didn’t offer much in the way of contrast to my son’s face……..all I did was use the channel mixer from the layers tool bar to change the image to monochrome and then use the eraser with black selected as the foreground color to revel the colored layer below only on my son………..

Miklk great job I like this ….this photo is a great choice for this type technique ….also you will notice that I reset the forum permission to show Jpg’s added as attachments to a post ….does it look better this way ?

I like the technique...
i think that both photos were a great choice for it and it really makes the focus of the picture stand out

I use the same technique but most of the time I make the background Sepia and ad some noise.

I like this technique how did you do it …..extract the boy ….and place him on another layer ?

There are (at least) 2 ways to do it.

In this photo I extracted the boy and put him on an new layer.

In the mean time I learned another technique:
- Do some adjustments if they are needed on your photo
- Duplicate the layer
- Do whatever you like as filter(s) or technique(s) on the new layer
- Create a mask so you can see the important part of the original.
- You can play also with the tranparency of the layers.

Since I know the second technique I stick with that one.

You can use the same technique in PS 6 with one modification. Instead of using the eraser tool, you use the paintbrush tool with black selected as the foreground color to reveal the color layer underneath.

I also have used this effect with some success I think. I use the layer mask method of desaturating the background part of the image.

The original gallery prints show the detail of the black and white background much better than these small jpegs.
