Need tutorial on combining exposures

My camera has a "bracketing" feature, where it can automatically take five different exposures of a single shot. I know what this is for and I know conceptually how to use it by combining correctly exposed parts of the different exposures into a single photo with everything correctly exposed.

What I don't know is how to do that combining with editing software. Can anyone point me to a good tutorial about this? I use the GIMP, but I can probably make the translation from other softwares' tutorials.
