Question macro vs extension

I have a 350D and was either looking at a 100mm Macro or extension tubes,Camera shops are giving all sorts of advise even down to cheaper close up lenses. Any suggestions would help, Thanks.

The extension tubes are usually less money but you need to make sure your lens will work well with them. I find I need a tripod when I use the tubes and they aren't a good idea in the field where you may want to change them (opening the sensor to the outside with the wind and dust is never a good idea).

If I could afford it, I'd go with both. If I had to make a choice, I'd pick the lens.

Hint: Look on Ebay for the tubes.
