Softness of 70-200 f4
Hmm, surprised to hear others saying that this lens is soft on the left on a 20D as this is a cropped camera. The "softness" IS apparent on the left with a full frame camera such as the 1Ds which I have, I doubt if this would affect the 20D quite frankly as the 1.6 crop factor would easily eliminate that affected part. In the full frame version it's not so much a softness (which could be "repaired" to a certain extent in something like Photoshop) but rather a clear aberration of bad glass which is not easily corrected in post-processing. Having said this, it is fair to say that it's present from 70 to about 95 mm and Ok after that to 200mm. Stopping down to f8 or f11 helps somewhat but not enough to solve the problem completely - what does solve it of course is using it as a 100mm-200mm lens and forgetting the 70-100 bit I'm afraid. It's still a good lens despite this flaw and I'd recommend it over the f2.8 model if cost or weight are in consideration. If you're shooting sports - you guess the answer ....
