Can anyone tell me how those snaps are shots with sharp subject with blurr back ground. (I own a Nikon's D70 camera. But new to SLR) thanks & regards.

Hello FOTO, welcome to Bytephoto, it’s good to meet you.

What you’re talking about is ‘Depth of Field’ (DOF) and it’s controlled by the aperture setting.

In very simple terms if you have an aperture setting of around F7.9 then more of the picture will be in focus than if you had a setting of say F2.8. Also note that F7.9 is classed as a smaller aperture setting than F2.8. Yes they are backwards ;) lol

I’ve attached a link to an article that might also help explain this, when you open the link look for the section titled ‘The Aperture Controls Light and Depth of Field’. This is also a great short course that you might like to read in total – it has some great information for anyone starting out.

The two pictures you see in this link are one of the best ways to understand aperture settings and DOF – the first pic of the cricket would have been taken with a large setting – say F2.8 – and the second pic of the glass of beer would have had a smaller setting – say F12.

I'll be honest and say that apertures are one of the hardest things I've had to try to understand myself - the explanation I've given you above is very basic indeed - others here will probably be able to give you more detailed information, but I've found that it's still very confusing so have tried to keep it simple when I explain it.

Good luck with your photography, you have one of the best cameras on the market at the moment with the D70 (imo) and several people here who own that same camera – they’ll only be too happy to help you with any queries you have while you're getting to know what it can do.

I look forward to seeing what shots you take – take care and remember its all about having fun. Cheers

Julie
