Views--no comments
Can someone explain why a lot of the photos posted have several views, but no comments? Maybe I misunderstood the intent of this site...if you don't like a photo please say so and why..we all have different opinions/perspectives-why do all these people go to the trouble of posting if no one will say anything?

Constructive Criticism
Nick1946,
It depends when the photo was posted as to how many comments they get. If the photo is posted early in the week like Sunday, which is the first day of the new contest week, then it's more likely that the photo will receive a comment. If a photo is posted on Friday or Saturday, well many of the commenters are shooting pictures on that day and may not have time to log on. I have been posting for about a month now and while some of my pictures get a lot of views, I have never not received at least several comments on the photo.
It depends on the frame of mind I'm in too. I may look at all of the photos on the site first and then pick and choose which photos move me enough to comment on them. You shouldn't take it wrong if people view your photos and then don't comment right away.
I try to give constructive feedback on as many photos as I can, but as you can see from the length of this note, I write a lot and it's the same for my critiques. When I post my photos, I try to post something unique and eye catching, so that people will look at what I'm posting and hopefully the photo will hold their interest long enough to comment on it.
They say that the average attention span of a web surfer is about 8 seconds, so if you want to have someone comment on your photos, post something that's catchy.
If I see something of yours in the future, I will comment on it.
Hope this helps answer your question.

Yup. Agree with Ponder. But I too really wish to have comments of those who viewed the picture. It will be helpful for the member. If I view a picture I always try to give comments to let the person know I viewed the image and appreciate his work and what little thing I noticed and know I try to share.

IMHO -- and experience -- some new users that post wonderful new pics get comments, and at other the other end of the stick, when new users post not so wonderful pics - they receive comments, and that leaves a large amount of in between photos submitted by new users - and not so new users too - that receive no comments...
I think it helps if new users start commenting on other photos. If you are not sure about your ability to do so - just comment by the guidelines set forth at http://www.bytephoto.com/modules.ph...page&pid=12
And don't rate - just comment - and read others comments, and ratings, and get a feel for it. When people see you are commenting - and participating, many will be more inclined to reciprocate.
Cheers

duh! Still no good answer, sorry folks. I'm aware of when the contest begins and ends. It would seem this forum thread makes my point, If you have the time to view the pic or read the forum, then make a comment, don't have to rate as shootem suggests- a little something is better than nothing......

Let's see if you like this answer, There are many many reasons. to list a few, there are many who look at the photo's but do not feel that they are qualified to make a judgement because they do not have the experience that they think is neccesary (Sad but they do) others just want to see what they are up against but don't want to take the time to offer advice, others only comment on images belonging to members who have commented on theirs first or are friends, the reason is two fold first is because they now like this person (at least for the time being) also they can now give their opinion with out fear that that person will give them a lower score, which brings me to the number one suckiest reason why they look but don't post. They are afraid that if they give that person a rating that they don't like that they will retaliate by giving them bad ratings in return, unfortunately a real issue here.
The truth is, most people don't have the time to comment on everyones' photos and they are good and fair people but they just don't have as much time as they need but they would like to see the ones that catch their eye. thats all.
Don't be dispairaged, I will give you two tips. One give out plenty of comments yourself, you will get what I call thank you comments back, if you really want comments give scores lower than a 8 and you are sure to get what I call retalitory comments, I never fail to get comments due to this reason. ;)
The second tip is to keep your image active make sure to comment back once someone has given you a comment some members add a seperate thank you or comment to every single person that leaves a rating that way their image stays up near the front of the active images and the cycle repeats.
Stick to it for a while here either you will love it or I will probably run you off, aparently I do that when I give people my honest opinion. I hope to see your posts,
Dave (The photo curmugeon)
PS if you post your images in the photo of the week contest you will get more views and thereby more opportunities for comments.

If I may paraphrase here, "'Tis better to remain silent, and appear ignorant, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."
Especially newbies, like me.
ChronosIII nailed it, IMHO.

Speaking for myself, I slmply don't have the time to post a comment for each photograph although I do try to look at everything and then comment on the ones that interest me the most or that I feel I can make a contribution to.
It does take time to comment in addition to looking if one wants to be thoughtful and constructiive in ones comments. I think it would be a huge task to do that for every image.
But I do see how one could become discouraged after many postings and no feedback.

I try to comment on quite a few photos per week of 'regulars' and 'newbies'. However, I don't have the time to do every single one either. What I do attempt to make a point of is that if somebody takes the time to comment on one of my shots, then I definitely try to reciprocate even if I have a bare minimum of time.
I also found the number of comments on my shots increased hugely when I took the time to comment on others. When I was new a year ago, I didn't know anyone - now I get regular comments too. I haven't actually posted this week myself because I've virtually got no time but hope that helps.

Hi Nick,
I also use another site passionforpixels.com It is fantastic. You will get comments made about your photos not very long after you upload. I always receive comments within 48 hours of uploading a photo. Just thought I would let you know, you might like to try this site. You do have to become a member and sign in to view galleries etc.

Thanks for the reply and information, I have taken a look at the site you mentioned and also signed up. I'll be looking for some of your post there. I'm finished posting on this site, haven't left yet as many have since I joined. I have been told/advised by above replies that people are busy and to get comments you should make comments-I tried that and it isn't worth the effort to me to post here anymore. Anyway thanks for the info, I'll give it a try.

I just took a look at passionforpixels.com and I must say I think the quality of work is very high. More diverse and thoughtful than at this site. I registered. I was amused though, that when I went to the forum "Bar with no beer" one of the first threads I spotted was one complaining about the very thing Nick is talking about here! lol. I'll keep an eye out for the two of you, my name will be the same.

Nick - I don't mean to be rude, but your gallery shows ONE photo, and it's in photo critiques and posted back in April. Why don't you post more recent shots, and enter POTW?
I try to give a lot of comments, and on a lot of my POTW entries I do get a comment. Some weeks go by and no one comments on my picture. That's life. Why don't you try posting again? It's like you gave barely gave this site a shot.
